Raymond J Merkel Sr.

Raymond James Merkel Sr., 77, of Machesney Park, passed away peacefully at home on April 15, 2011, with his family by his side. Born May 24, 1933 in Lacrosse, WI the son of the late Jacob and Wilhelmena Merkel. He married Betty Mattson on September 26, 1953. He retired from Reed Chatwood in March 1997. His pride and joy was Cuddles, their loving dog. He enjoyed wood-working and making crafts for shows. He loved fishing, collecting hats and gardening. He is survived by his wife, Betty; children, Jan (Mark) Berryman, Rhonda (Jeff) Vurnovas, Raymond (Janet) Merkel Jr., grandchildren, Candice, Jerome (Erin) Berryman, Josh and Amanda Vurnovas, and Kimberly Merkel. Predeceased by brothers Merle and Clayton and sister, Irene. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the family. The family would like to thank all the staff at Northern Illinois Hospice and the volunteers for the wonderful care they gave Raymond and his family. Funeral Services will be 10:00 am Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine, Machesney Park, IL 61115. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
