Vernon Martindale, 77, of Rockford passed away Wednesday October 5, 2022 at OSF St. Anthony Hospital. Vernon was born on November 4, 1944 in Rockford, the son of Vernon F. Martindale and Berniece (Ketchum) Martindale. He married Beverly L. Johnson on November 23, 1963. Vernon was a Veteran the United States Air Force and worked as a crew chief on C130s during the Vietnam War. After leaving the Air Force he went to work for Chrysler and retired after 34 years. He was an avid motorcyclist, traveling all over the country and every Wednesday would be meet up with his buddies, have breakfast and then they would go riding for the day. Vernon enjoyed taking care of his lawn and especially mowing. He loved being with his family, friends, and was available to help anyone that needed it. His greatest joy was spending time with his family and grandkids.
Vernon is survived by his wife Beverly; daughter: Deborah Otto; mother: Berniece Martindale; daughter-in-law: Debra Martindale; grandchildren: Phillip Wright, Tia Foster, Bailey Otto, Paige Coupland, Sarah Ferguson and Alicia Johnson; 14 great-grandchildren; brothers: Tim Martindale, Mark Martindale and Brian (Lynn) Martindale; sister: Melanie (Tom) Lichty; sister-in-law: Elizabeth Martindale; brother-in-law: Bill Johnson; several nieces and nephews.
Vernon was preceded in death by his father, son Rob, son-in-law Brian Otto, brothers Louis and Brad Martindale; sister-in-law: Betty (Sue) Martindale.

Memorial service to celebrate Vernon’s life will be 4:00 PM Saturday October 15, 2022 at John’s Restaurant and Pizzeria 2914 11th Street in Rockford, IL 61109. Inurnment with Military Honors will be 1:00 PM Monday October 17, 2022 at Sunset Memorial Gardens 8800 N. Alpine Road in Machesney Park. Sunset Funeral Home is assisting the family with arrangements. Cremation rites have been accorded.
