Vestle R. “Dewey” McElyea, Jr., 67, of Davis, IL formerly of Rockford, passed away Wednesday, September 23, 2020 after a sudden illness surrounded by his loving family. He was born January 11, 1953 in Rockford, the son of Vestle R. and Patricia (Guffey) McElyea. Dewey married the love of his life, Jackie Ramsey on July 26, 1975 in Rockford. He dedicated 43 years at Advanced Disposal where he was a member of the Teamsters, Local 325. Dewey was a member of the Eagles Club. Dewey loved fishing, golfing and NASCAR especially Dale Earnhardt, Sr. He was an avid fan of the Chicago Bears and the St. Louis Cardinals. Dewey was a kind, very hardworking and helpful man who would give you the shirt off his back. Most of all, he loved spending time with his family.
Dewey is loved and missed by his wife of 45 years, Jackie McElyea; children, Donnie (Scottina) McElyea, and Dawn (Blake) Dummer; grandchildren, Isaiah, Kyle and Aida; siblings, Debra (Paul) Beal, Brenda (George) Lawrence, and Patty (Matt) Robins; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers Calvin and Joey McElyea.
A visitation will be held from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Monday, September 28, 2020 at Sunset Funeral Home, 8800 N. Alpine Rd, Machesney Park, IL 61115. Private services will take place. Burial in Sunset Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
