Sara Rebecca Buntin Gunn of Macon passed away on July 27, 2024. The family will greet friends between 5:00 and 7:00 pm Friday, August 2nd at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, 1419 Bass Road, Macon, GA. A memorial service will be held at the same location at 2:00 pm Saturday, August 3rd. Rev. Julie Long, Dr. Jody Long and Dr. Stanley Roberts will officiate.
Becky was born July 23, 1947 in Albany, GA to the late William Henry Buntin, Sr. and Sara McCollum Buntin. She was predeceased by her parents as well as her brothers, Dr. William Henry Buntin, Jr. of Albany and Dr. Robert McCollum Buntin of St. Simons Island. She was a graduate of Albany High School, Mercer University, where she was an Alpha Delta Pi, and Georgia College where she received her Master’s Degree.
Becky had a strong faith. She was raised Methodist but was equally comfortable in the Baptist Church where she led youth groups, taught youth and adult Sunday School classes, sang in choirs (and at Carnegie Hall) and served as a Deacon.
Becky had an indomitable spirit and never flew beneath the radar. She had the courage of her convictions and never failed to stand up for herself and especially for others if the situation called for it. It mattered not whom she had to stand against.
Becky was a teacher in the highest sense of the word and her enthusiasm was contagious. Her teaching career spanned over forty years and included Mercer University, Bellevue Elementary, Howard Middle School and Stratford Academy. Her longest service was teaching Civics and Latin at First Presbyterian Day School where she taught for 19 years. During her service she built the Latin offerings from a one-year course for eighth graders to a full five year program including an Advanced Placement course. Her students knew that she expected their best effort, and she got it. They knew her to be thorough, fair and fun, often giving dancing lessons in class before prom. She always enjoyed honors day when she would stretch her award winning students across the gymnasium. In addition to teaching, she also served as cheerleading coach, Honor Council advisor and started the Vikings In Action Club for community service. She organized and led several summer trips to Italy and Greece to show her students the places and cultures they had studied. Her students honored her by dedicating the Yearbook and Literary Magazine to her, and she was twice chosen Star Teacher. They are also known to quote Mrs.Gunn regularly to their own children and students.
In her family she wore many hats including CFO, Chief Fun Officer. Whether one-on-one or at large gatherings, Becky always brought the fun, because she “carried a good time in her back pocket.”
She will be forever loved and remembered by all of her family including Guy, her husband of 56 years, her son Webb (Thy) of Cartersville, her daughter Marti (Joe) of Roswell, grandchildren, Samantha, Sara, Mac and Angelina (Victor), special sisters-in-law Margie Wheeler, Frances Buntin and Gloria Buntin, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and students.
The family gives special thanks and love to Becky’s cousin, Beth McCollum, who for four years made weekly trips from Milledgeville to visit and have fun with Becky. We also thank the wonderful staff and administration of Madison Heights at the Prado for their patient, loving care as well as the staff of Regency Southern Hospice.
In lieu of flowers the family request memorial contributions to The Alzheimer’s Association, https://act.alz.org/site/Donation2?df_id=39209&mfc_pref=T&39209.donation=form1 or The Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research Foundation, https://www.alzinfo.org/donate/donation_form/ .
