Cubbedge Snow, Jr., passed in his home after an extended illness on Sunday, December, 4, 2016. Cubbedge was a lifelong resident of Macon. He was born to Frances Cater and Cubbedge Snow in The Macon Hospital on May 20, 1929. He attended Joseph Clisby and then Lanier High School, graduating in 1947. While at Lanier he lettered in football and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the ROTC. He then attended Emory University where he was a member of The Kappa Alpha Order and served as its president. He was also inducted into Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year. He went on to earn his Juris Doctor from the Walter F. George School of Law at Mercer University in 1952. He graduated Magna Cum Laude and served as the president of the Phi Alpha Delta law fraternity. He was immediately commissioned as a legal officer in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Del Rio, Texas. He remained in Air Force Reserve and retired in 1989 as a “full bird” Colonel.
After active duty, he returned to Macon and began his long legal career at the firm of Martin, Snow, Grant, and Napier. During his career he was blessed to practice with father, Cubbedge Snow, and his son, Cubbedge Snow, III. He specialized in defense and was a member of the American College of Trial Lawyers. He was a leader in the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association and was listed as one of the Best Trial Lawyers in America. He was dedicated to the legal profession on the local, state, and national levels, serving as president of the Macon Bar Association in 1967 and the State Bar of Georgia in 1974. He served for many years on the State Bar Board of Governors. On a national level, he was on the American Bar Association Board of Governors and in the ABA House of Delegates from 1994-2014.
His greatest professional passion was Georgia Legal Services which provides free legal services to low-income people in civil matters, and he firmly believed in the principle that legal representation should be available to all. For this dedication he received the Sol Clark Award from the State Bar of Georgia Access to Justice Committee in 1988. In addition, he received the Champion for Justice Award from the Georgia Legal Services Foundation, and locally the Fighter for Justice Award.
He has attended Mulberry Street United Methodist Church since his birth. Over the years he taught both the junior high class and the Joy Class. He served as Chairman of both the Administrative Board and the Board of Trustees.
Cubbedge had a life-long love of the Boy Scouts of America and achieved the rank of Eagle. He served as the leader for the local Explorer Post. He was president of the Central Georgia Council and later received the Silver Beaver Award, recognizing adult leadership for exceptional character and distinguished service to the council.
A charter member of the Macon Civic Club, Cubbedge served as the its third president and oversaw the production of the club’s first annual variety show in 1961 to raise money for charitable contributions within the Middle Georgia community. He was a member of Idle Hour Club and served on the Board of Directors, following his father and preceding his son on this board.
Another of Cubbedge’s true passions was travel, and he loved nothing more than planning a trip and jamming it with every possible activity. He travelled whenever possible, both domestically and abroad, sometimes on business, but always for pleasure. His constant companion on these many excursions was his wife of 66 years Edyth McKibben Snow, who never failed to gamely rise to the challenges of his itineraries.
Cubbedge’s deepest desire was to live a life of integrity, action, and faith boosted by his sustained enthusiasm. His final advice would be to live the life you have now, not the life you had in the past or the life you hope to have in the future, but the life you have in the present.
He is survived by his wife Edyth and his children Laine Gerritsen (Greg) of Boulder, CO, Cubbedge Snow III (Courtney) of Macon, and Charlie Snow (Lori) of Macon. He enjoyed eight wonderful grandchildren: Ansley Snow Beadle (Zack) of Atlanta, Cubbedge Snow IV of Charlottesville, VA, Connor Snow (Chrissie) of Richmond, CA, Alyssa Gerritsen Carlson (Ken) of Boulder, CO, and Graham Gerritsen of Boulder, as well as Kailey Rhodes (Matt Hlavaty) of Portland, Oregon and Wade and Sutton Snow of Macon. He delighted in his four great grandchildren as well.
A Celebration of His Life will be held on Wednesday, December 7 at 11:00 a.m. at Mulberry Street United Methodist Church with Rev. Jimmy Towson and Rev. Creede Hinshaw officiating. Burial is private in Riverside Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday in the Ballroom of Idle Hour Golf and Country Club.
