Donald was preceded in death by his parents, James Martin Smith and Mary Lou Harrell Smith and his brothers, Bobby and Billy. He served in the Army in Germany and Paris. Donald retired from the Post Office as a letter carrier and then worked as a security guard at Lake Wildwood for 9 years.
Donald played all sports and was an avid fan of all teams in the State of Georgia, but especially the Braves and Falcons. During one season as a Manager of the Medical Center Team his batting average was .725. He also played an entire tournament with broken ribs. Donald managed and played 3rd base for a Senior League Softball team. He coached his son in baseball from the age of 9 until 18, including the Yankee’s during the inaugural year at Bloomfield Little League. He then drove to many states to watch his son, Brannen, play for Mercer. He then followed his only grandchild, Blair, “a precious child”, from the age of 6 to 18 in all four of her sports. She was the light of his life.
Donald was also a member of the Johnny V’s Breakfast Club, where he ate almost daily. He had a love for his family like no other. Donald had the kindest heart and was always concerned with the well being of others. He was always looking to build confidence in others. Donald will be truly missed.
Donald is survived by his only child Brannen (Jenny), his granddaughter Blair; extended family members, Cindy and Bobby Long, Lecia Walker; and Jane Bentley, Brannen’s mother and dear friend.
