

MACON – Edward Thomas Cassidy, 92, died peacefully, surrounded by his family, Tuesday, April 10, 2012. Mr. Cassidy was born January 20, 1920 in Macon, Georgia, the fourth child of William and Cecile McCreary Cassidy. A life-long member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, he attended St. Joseph School, Lanier High School, Mercer University and George Washington University in Washington, D.C. While attending GW, he worked for the U. S. Justice Department. His education was interrupted by World War II.
Mr. Cassidy was a decorated pilot in the Army Air Corps, flying sixty-eight missions in the Pacific Theater. When he returned home to Macon, he joined his brother, the late William James Cassidy, Jr., in the family business, Cassidy’s Garage, established by their father in 1915 as Macon’s first automotive service station. The brothers later co-founded Cassidy Auto Parts and Machine Shop. He continued to run Cassidy’s Garage until he retired in 2011 at the age of 91.
Over the years, Mr. Cassidy served as president of the Macon Civitan Club and was co-founder and past president of the Mount de Sales Athletic Association. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion Joseph N. Neel Post 3. He and his wife, Clifford, were founding members of InTown Macon Neighborhood Association and Silvertops at St. Joseph Church. Mr. and Mrs. Cassidy were recipients of the St. Francis de Sales Award from Mount de Sales Academy.
Mr. Cassidy was preceded in death by his wife of sixty-four years, Clifford Wood Cassidy; by sisters, Cecile McKenna Hogan and Anita Fitzwilliam and brothers, William Cassidy, James Cassidy, and John D. Cassidy. Survivors include daughters, Carol McMichael of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, and Tetia Dennis and her husband, Neil of Atlanta and Macon, and sons, Edward Thomas Cassidy, Jr., of Bryson City, North Carolina, John D. Cassidy and his wife, Suzanne, of Macon and Mark McCreary Cassidy, M.D., and Hosea Doucet, M.D., of New Orleans, Louisiana; grandchildren, Craig McMichael, Brian McMichael (Amy), Letitia McMichael, John D. Cassidy, Jr. (Necia), and Patrick Cassidy; great- grandchildren, Kyndal, Presley and Max McMichael and Owen Cassidy; and many nieces and nephews, including Cecile and Jim Messer.
A Rosary will be said at 7 p.m., Friday at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street, followed by visitation. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph Catholic Church with burial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Father Allan McDonald will officiate.
