Edwin Herbert “Herb” Daws, 92, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2020, in Macon. Private, family-only graveside services will be held on Jan. 2, 2021, at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery. Dr. Mark Hudgins will officiate.
Born in Social Circle on January 31, 1928, Herb was the son of William Alvin Daws and Martha Louise Armistead Daws. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Howell and Marcus, and his loving and devoted wife of nearly 72 years, Ruth.
After completing high school, Herb moved to Atlanta, where he worked for the United States Postal Service before enlisting in the military, serving in Korea.
Upon his return from Korea, Herb resumed his career with the postal service and started a family with his wife, whom he married on November 27, 1948. His children, Karen and Jim, brought immense joy to his life, and he could often be found praising them for their multiple accomplishments in life.
A man of humble beginnings, Herb’s career took him throughout the East Coast, living in Atlanta, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Miami Beach, Florida, receiving keys to the city from the latter two.
After a decades-long career, retiring as Eastern Regional Postmaster General, Herb and his wife settled in Sandy Springs, where they resided for more than 30 years. While there, he was actively involved in Heritage Sandy Springs, the Kiwanis Club, and his Sunday School class at Peachtree Presbyterian. In 2018, the couple moved to Macon.
Alongside his wife, Herb traveled the world, visiting destinations in South America, Asia, Europe, and throughout North America. However, he could often be found working in the yard, cheering on the Bulldogs, and caring for his loyal canine companion, Muffin.
Above all, Herb took great pride in his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. With his trusted camera in hand, he documented their various successes, eager to share with family, friends, and the occasional stranger.
Left to cherish his memory include his daughter, Karen (Conway) Broun of Athens; son, Jim (Ann) Daws of Macon; grandchildren, Taylor (Kim) Broun of Macon, Carter (Courtney) Broun of Atlanta, Palmer Daws of Atlanta, and Drew Daws of Tuscaloosa, Alabama; great-granddaughters, Parker Broun of Atlanta and Addie Ruth Broun of Macon; sister, Margaret Garner of Social Circle; sister-in-law, Hazel Daws of Douglasville; and several nieces and nephews.
Memorial gifts may be sent to Ingleside Baptist Church at 834 Wimbish Road, Macon, GA, 31210.
