

Dr. Homer Sheridan Nelson passed on June 13, 2026, at the age of 92. Born on October 28, 1933, in Adel, and a resident of Macon, Georgia, Dr. Nelson will be honored at A Celebration of His Life at Snow's Memorial Chapel, 1419 Bass Road, Macon, Georgia 31210, on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, at 11:00 am. with a visitation/reception following. Bruce Goddard and Claude Smith will officiate. Burial will be private. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the donor's favorite charity. The family would like to thank the staff of Pine Pointe Hospice for their kindness and support.
Dr. Nelson was the son of the late Edna Miami Paulk Nelson and Homer William Nelson and was preceded in death by his sister, Edna Sue Nelson and brother, John William Nelson, MD. He was educated in Adel Elementary School, Cecil Elementary School, Cook County High School and was a graduate of Mercer University. Dr. Nelson obtained his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, did his rotating internship in The Macon Hospital and did his residency in Ophthalmology at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta. Dr. Nelson was valedictorian of his Cook High School Class, a member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society at Mercer, a member of Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society at the Medical College of Georgia, received the Beacon of Hope Award, and was a life-member of Mercer's Presidents Club.
Dr. Nelson served in the United States Air Force from 1966-1968 (USAF Hospital Maxwell AFB) as a Captain. He was a member of the Bibb County Medical Society, the Medical Association of Georgia, the Georgia Society of Ophthalmology (Vice-President), and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (Fellow). Dr. Nelson was a former member of Centenary United Methodist Church and enjoyed many hobbies including, photography, fishing, hunting, UGA football, Mercer University activities, and picking his guitar. He was also a volunteer physician at the Macon Volunteer Clinic for 14 years. He served many hospitals during his lifetime including, The Macon Hospital (Secretary of Medical Staff), Middle Georgia Hospital, the Medical Center of Central Georgia, Coliseum Park Hospital (Chief of Medical Staff) and Parkview Hospital.
Dr. Nelson is survived by his wife, Kay Turner Nelson; sons, William Sheridan Nelson (Julie) and Walter Garland Nelson (Susan); step-son, Charles Lee Wooddall; step-daughter, Jenny Wooddall Hunt (Joe); grandchildren, Jesse Nelson (Kate), Betty Carol Nelson, Eli Nelson (Jess), and Ellie Vo (Phuoc); step-grandchildren, Cole Wooddall (Chelsea), Cammy Wooddall, Charlie Wooddall, Luke Wooddall, Hannah Kay Freeman (Tyler), and Sarah Ashleigh Hunt; 2 step-great-grandchildren.
Snow's Memorial Chapel, Bass Road, has charge of arrangements.
