MACON – Joseph “Sandy” Wooten Sandefur, Jr., 69, passed away Friday, January 20, 2012. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Tuesday at Ingleside Baptist Church. Burial will be at 3:00 PM at Parkhill Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia. Dr. Tim McCoy and Dr. David Peterson will officiate. The family will greet friends from 5 until 7 PM Monday at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street. In lieu of flowers the family request that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, Central Georgia Chapter, 886 Mulberry Street, Macon, GA 31201 or the American Cancer Society, 804 Cherry Street, Macon, GA 31201.
Mr. Sandefur was born in Augusta, Georgia the son of the late Joseph Wooten Sandefur, Sr. and Drucilla McAfee Sandefur. He was a veteran of the insurance business representing AFLAC for over 41 years, a franchise owner of Zaxby’s Restaurants, publisher of Leonard's Losers and various other business ventures throughout his career. Mr. Sandefur was a member of Ingleside Baptist Church, a charter member and past president of the Macon Sertoma Club and was a member of numerous insurance associations.
Above all else he loved his family and friends. He adored Anita, his wife of 48 years, and his children and grandchildren. He was a great father and grandfather.
Boating, saltwater fishing and the beautiful Gulf of Mexico were among his greatest passions. He was happiest when he was on the water. He loved the outdoors, golfing and hunting.
He had recently celebrated his 50th high school reunion in Columbus, Georgia and relished reuniting with his friends from Columbus High School.
Mr. Sandefur is survived by his wife, Anita Yarbrough Sandefur of Macon; children, Terrell (Kimberly) Sandefur of Macon, Hudson (Leslie) Sandefur and Sloan (Stephanie) Sandefur all of Daphne, AL; grandchildren, Wyatt, Nina, Lanier, Amelia, Joseph, Oscar, Juliette and Wesley Sandefur; sister, Cilla Shaw (Dave) Watson of Pine Mountain, GA; several nieces and nephews.
