

MACON – Joyce Kingery Clay, 83, passed away Tuesday, May 01, 2012 at a local hospital. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., Friday at Ebenezer United Methodist Church with burial in the church cemetery. Dr. John Beck and Dr. Derek McAleer will officiate. The family will meet friends from 5 – 6 p.m., Thursday at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street. Those who wish may make memorial contributions to the Methodist Home for Children and Youth, 304 Pierce Avenue, Macon, GA 31204.
Mrs. Clay, daughter of the late Alva Willie and Sidney Clyde Kingery, was born in Metter, GA where she was educated in the Metter School System. She graduated from Wesleyan College, Macon, GA in 1949. While at Wesleyan, she met her late husband, Clarence Henry Clay, Jr. of Macon. Mrs. Clay taught second grade in the early years of her marriage at Alexander IV. With the birth of her first son, Mrs. Clay left teaching to become a full time mother. She was devoted to her family and was active in her boys’ school activities, little league and scouting.
Mrs. Clay was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church, the Sidney Lanier Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy, her garden club and the Idle Hour Country Club. One of Mrs. Clay’s passions was reading. Over the years she built an extensive library comprised of thousands of volumes. She loved the beach and enjoyed spending parts of the year at her home on Amelia Island, FL. Bridge was her favorite activity. Mrs. Clay was a member of many bridge clubs through the years. She will be missed by members of her two current bridge clubs.
Survivors include her sons, Clarence Henry Clay, III of Macon and David Kingery Clay (Mark Rahe) of Atlanta; her grandson, Clarence Henry Clay, IV (Jennifer) of Tampa, FL; her brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Dr. Henry Tucker Clay and Cater Clay of Macon; her nieces, Cater Clay, (B) Thompson, Frances Louise Clay; her nephew, Dr. Henry Tucker Clay, Jr. (Bessie).
