Lallie Cannon Merritt

MACON - Lallie Cannon Merritt, 85, passed away Sunday, April 8, 2012 surrounded by her family. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday at Macon Memorial Park with Mr. Glen Warnock officiating. The family will meet friends from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Pio Nono Avenue. Instead of flowers, please consider making a contribution to a charity of your choice.

Lal was born August 6, 1926 to Jesse O. and Lucille Adams Cannon in Laurens County. She was preceded in death by her husband of 47 years, Wilburn Merritt, both her parents and her brother, Raymond C “Bud” Cannon.

She is survived by her children, Keith Merritt (Jennifer) and Terri Bennett (Steve), grandchildren Merritt Brooks ( Cody), Kyle Merritt, Neal Scoggins and Ben Scoggins(Kim); 3 great-grandchildren Ciara, Caleb and Kash; her brother-in-law Marvin Merritt ( May); sisters Grace Pierce and Mary “Punk” Freeman; her long-time companion, Dr. W.C.Whitley and numerous nieces and nephews and friends.

Lal led a full life. Her work career started out of high school as a Rosie Riveter to a Southern Bell operator (She was crowned Miss Southern Bell in 1949.) She turned in her headset to raise her two children and support them as numerous room mothers, PTA's and Booster Clubs. She returned to the workforce serving at Ballard A as the Registrar from which she retired.

Lal will be remembered for her plentiful kitchen which provided anyone who sat there a meal and a slice of her famous pound cake and pecan pies. She enjoyed competition – whether on a softball field or sitting at the card table. She played softball until she was 50 and could still play a mean game of badminton at 78. She was lucky at fishing and poker, usually winning at both! She loved Elvis, frogs, family and friends. Her fierce independent spirit and infamous stubborn streak have influenced all who knew her.
