Louis J. “Jack” Spears, 87, passed away on Tuesday, September 6, 2016. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, September 9, at 11 a.m. at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street with the Rev. Steve Waldorf and the Rev. Loran Smith officiating. The family will greet friends on Thursday, September 8 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. at the residence of John Barfield and William Bercini, 7777 Zebulon Road, Macon 31220. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Methodist Children’s Home, 304 Pierce Avenue, Macon 31204.
Jack was born in Perry, Georgia in 1929, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Luther Bennett Spears. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Luther Bennett Spears. Jack was a longtime member of Park Memorial United Methodist Church.
Jack was a graduate of Warner Robins High School. He served two years active duty in the Army followed by thirty-four years in the Air Force National Guard, retiring with the rank of Major. After his discharge from active duty, he returned to Middle Georgia and worked at Robins Air Force Base for thirty-nine years.
What he was most proud of was the more than thirty years he served as a scout master and the impact he made on the lives of innumerable boys. He delighted in telling people that the boys all thought him “mean as a snake,” but the devotion many of his former scouts showed him in his later years proved nothing could have been further from the truth.
Jack is survived by his sister, Beverly Burson of Brandon, Florida, a nephew, Leslie Burson, and four nieces, Leigh Ann Siegel (Jeff), Mary Todd Bohlke (Jeff), Carol Burson Todd, and Dawn Burson.
