Marguerite Lockhart Thurmond, 86, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 19, 2021 in her home at Belmont Village Johns Creek in Atlanta, GA. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 24, 2021 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at Snow’s Memorial Chapel on Bass Road. A public Graveside Service will be held at Riverside Cemetery, Madison St. at 2:30 p.m. with the Rev. Sam Waldron officiating. Masks and social distancing are required to be in attendance.
Marguerite was born in Glascock County to the late Charles Raymond Lockhart and Louise Yarbrough Lockhart. She moved to Macon, GA at age seven and graduated from Miller High School. Marguerite loved to sing at her church, Mabel White Baptist and also on the Victory Hour.
Marguerite married Jefferson Clifford (J.C.) Thurmond, Jr., in June 1953 and moved to Savannah, GA. There they were active members of Bull Street Baptist Church where Marguerite sang in the church choir. She participated in various music opportunities in Savannah and civic chorale. Marguerite was a member of the Exchangette Club of Savannah. She went back to school and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Armstrong State College with an Associate Degree in Nursing. Later she would graduate from Georgia College with a BS degree in Nursing.
Marguerite and J.C. moved back to Macon, GA in 1972 where they were active members of Mabel White Baptist Church, Ingleside Baptist Church, and First Baptist Church of Christ. Marguerite served as a choir member, Sunday School teacher, youth trips as nurse, senior adult trips as nurse/participant and as a deacon. She enjoyed traveling, medical mission trips, and volunteer work with the Red Cross. Marguerite continued her singing with Morning Music Club, Mercer University Chorus, and the Macon Civic Chorale. She traveled to Europe with the chorale in London, Germany, and also at Carnegie Hall in New York.
Marguerite moved to Atlanta, GA in 2015 to be close to family.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jefferson Clifford Thurmond, Jr., and her son, Jefferson Clifford Thurmond, III. She was also preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Raymond and Eleanor Lockhart.
Marguerite is survived by her sister, Annette (Jimmy) Ford, brother, George “Sonny” (Charlotte) Lockhart. She is survived by her daughters; Cynthia (Paul) Fruits, Marcia (Robert) Holcombe, and four grandchildren; Ryan Fruits, Lauren (Chris) Sather, Emily (Will) Geggatt, Melissa (Eric) Branen. Also survived by four great-grandchildren; Mychael Fruits, Bennett Sather, George Sather and Morgan Branen.
