Mary Helen Steed Jones died peacefully on January 3rd at the age of 100 years old. She was born in Fairburn, GA to Joseph Wylie and Mary Emma Holliman Steed. She was the second of six children. She is predeceased by her siblings Benjamin Emory Steed, Evelyn Margaret Steed Boyd, Francis Porter Steed and Joseph Wylie Steed.
Upon graduation from high school she attended a career business school in Atlanta. Helen met and married Wallace Glenn Jones of Fayetteville, GA. Glenn was a Civil Engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and his career led them to the Texas towns of Galveston, San Antonio, Ft.Hood/Killeen, Wylie, Garland, Waco and Marshall.
In 1955 they moved back to their Georgia roots and settled in Macon, GA.
Glenn was a senior civil engineer at Robbins Air Force base in Warner Robbins but Helen chose Macon for their new hometown.
Helen was a hard worker. She took great pride in doing her very best at everything she undertook whether it was her accounting jobs, her cooking, her entertaining, her sewing, her church activities or her family. She also enjoyed keeping up with her long standing Texas friends. In Macon she worked for Tom Winchester Civil Engineering and Associates which was the most enjoyable and rewarding experience of her long career. And as stated by a relative...." Helen was always perfectly coiffed and elegantly attired wherever she went. She truly had a fine sense of fashion."
Helen readily volunteered her talents whenever she was called upon. She would drop anything she was doing to go and be of service to others. She especially enjoyed her church Vineville United Methodist and the Ed Cook Sunday School class. She served for many years as the treasurer of the United Methodist Women's Association.
She is survived by her only child Emma Jo Jones Ivey and her husband Billy of Atlanta, her granddaughter Allison Ploeger Young and her husband
Richard, her two grandsons William Whitaker Young and Thomas Steed Young of Macon as well as her sister Dorothy Jeanette Steed Lassiter and sisters-in-law Helen Steed and Joanne Steed all of Fairburn and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
