Ophelia Holton Hancock, age 89, died Friday morning in Macon, Georgia. Funeral services and interment will be held on Tuesday, December 29, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. at Macon Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. Norman Carter officiating. The service is open for public attendance, but mask and social distancing are required. The service may be viewed live by visiting www.facebook.com/snowsmemorial. Mrs. Hancock was born in Mitchell County to the late Wesley Lee Holton and Ethel Miranda Shiver. She was a member of the Ruth Sunday School Class at Pine Forest Baptist Church in Macon, where she and Jerry, her husband of 52 years, led their family to God. She faithfully carried the love of Christ into her home, work and community.
After graduating valedictorian of her high school class, she completed degrees from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, Georgia College and State University, Mercer University, and the University of Georgia. During her thirty-one years as an educator, she taught elementary and high school in Georgia and with the American Dependent Schools in Okinawa, Japan. She taught Developmental Studies Reading for twenty-three years at Macon State College where she was Associate Professor Emerita. She was author of seven editions of the college text Reading Skills for College Students.
She enjoyed living at John Wesley Villas in Macon where she had many friends. She is survived by her sister, Eunice Holton; daughter, Celina Sutton (Johnny); son, Darryl Hancock (Laura); four granddaughters, Caroline Walker (Jarvis) Catherine Hancock, Emily Hancock, and Rebecca Hancock; and two great grandchildren, Carter and Sophia.
She was a loving wife and mother, dedicated teacher, gifted author, and an exemplary homemaker. She will be remembered for her deep love for her family, Christian faith, and the wonderful connections she made with everyone who knew her.
