
GRAY - Richard Binion Griffin, 77, passed away Monday night, April 2, 2012 at a local hospital after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday at Snow’s Memorial Chapel, Cherry Street with burial at 2:00 p.m. in Powelton Community Cemetery, Powelton, GA. Brother Ron McClung and Mr. Albert Bloodworth will officiate. The family will meet friends from 10:00 a.m. to service time on Thursday at the funeral home. In keeping with the wishes of Mr. Griffin and his family, they respectfully ask that a donation in lieu of flowers be made to Powelton Cemetery Fund, 4316 Sparta Road, SE, Crawfordville, GA 30631 or to a worthy charity of your choice in his honor. Mr. Griffin was the son of the late Binion and Edith Burgamy Griffin of Hancock County. Richard graduated with Honors from Sparta High School and continued his education in accounting and finance via correspondence courses while serving his country as a member of the 4th Armored Division of the United States Army.
He joined Cherokee Products Company shortly after returning home from his military service in 1960 and continued his career there as Corporate Treasurer until his retirement. His hobbies included reading, further study of a variety of interesting and unique subjects, furniture refinishing and working in the gardens he shared with his wife.
Richard was an active participant in several local civic groups and served on the Organizing Committee for Jonesco Academy and was a member of the board of directors for a number years.
He is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Virginia; son Ken Griffin and his wife Denise; granddaughters, Stephanie and Jamie Griffin; brothers John Ed, Jesse and Harold Griffin; sister Edith Tuttle and Joyce Hendley and many nieces and nephews.
