

Richard graduated from Lanier High School in Macon in 1962. He attended the University of Georgia and later earned a degree in Economics from Mercer University. Following graduation, he proudly served his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
After his military service, Richard enjoyed a successful career in equipment sales and later became a founding partner of Peachtree Planning in Macon. He was a top representative at the firm for over thirty years, receiving numerous achievement awards during his career.
An avid golfer, Richard also enjoyed traveling, shag dancing, spending time with his beloved dogs, and relaxing at the beach on Amelia Island. Above all, Richard cherished time with his family and took great pride in his two sons and grandchildren.
Richard was preceded in death by his parents, Mary Louise Turner and Rudolph Smith, and his brother, Perry Smith.
He is survived by his wife, Deborah Elliott-Smith; his sons, Brent Smith of Atlanta and Andrew (Cheryl) Smith of Chattanooga; his stepson, Roy Elliott of San Diego; and his beloved grandchildren, Boone and River Smith. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Ann (Sidney) Charles of Canton, Georgia; his nieces, Ginny (Billy) Ryan of Canton and Mary Allison Hobby of Cumming, Georgia; and his great-nieces, Gracie (Reid) Vinson and Abigail Hobby.
Those who knew Richard will remember his intelligence, quiet strength, and his kind and gentle nature. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and in the love he shared with those closest to him.
The family is grateful for the caregivers from Home Instead, especially Monica Vaught, Marvin Inegbenebo, and Kalilya Bryant.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a local animal rescue or shelter organization.
