

Robert A. (Bobby) Smith passed away peacefully in his sleep on Monday, May 8, 2017 in Macon. He was born on February 6, 1922 in Macon to the late James Augustus Smith, Jr. and Marguerite McLucas Smith. Bobby was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Margaret Smith; son, Robert A. (Bob) Smith, Jr; and son-in-law, Tom Stefani. He grew up in Macon where he attended Joseph Clisby Grammar School and graduated from Lanier High School.
Bobby served three years in the U.S. Army with 18 months in Europe with the 55th Quartermaster Base Depot during World War II. He participated in the invasion of Normandy, Day 7. Bobby returned home to Macon in January 1946, to take over operation of S&S Cafeterias as Executive Vice-President until 1967, at which time he took over operation of State Wholesale Foods until 2005 when he retired as co-owner of S&S Cafeterias.
Bobby, a member of Vineville Baptist Church since 1957, was ordained a Deacon in 1967 and served on all committees as Chairman. He was a Sunday school teacher for 25 years and an active member of Pioneer and Taylor Bible Classes. His highest honor was to be name Deacon Emeritus in 2005 for outstanding leadership, generosity, wisdom and faith in devotion to his church and his God.
Bobby was a member of Idle Hour Country Club for many years where he loved his golf games. He as a fine gentleman in his life style and carried that on to the golf course.
Bobby is surrived by his daughter, Sandy Smith Stefani of Roswell; granddaughters, Karla Stefani Munder (Eric) of Roswell and Amanda Stefani of Roswell; grandson, Peter Augustus Smith (Mykin) of Charleston, SC; great-grandchildren, Wayne and Chloe Munder of Roswell; brother, James A. Smith, III of Macon; cousin, Edwina Beall of Macon; and several nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Vineville Baptist Church on Thursday, May 11 at 2:00 PM. Dr. Richard Kremer, Dr. Bill Hardee and Mr. Charles Jay will officiate. A reception and visitation will follow in the Family Life Center. Burial will be private, for family only. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Vineville Baptist Church Endowment Fund, 2591 Vineville Avenue, Macon 31204.
