Ms. Sarah Louisa Jones, a long-time resident of Macon, Georgia, died on Tuesday, March 17, 2026. She was the only girl and fifth child born to Dr. & Mrs. George Hawkins Jones. Sarah graduated from West End High School (Nashville, Tennessee) and received a Degree in Education from Millsaps College (Jackson, Mississippi). Sarah was an active member of Kappa Delta sorority while attending college. Sarah taught school at Winship Elementary and later at John H. Heard Elementary. Beloved by her students, she was known for her consistent discipline, sense of humor, and the use of real-life examples to kindle her students' interest to learn. Her students often gave her hugs when their paths crossed, even after many years.
Sarah was an active tennis player at John Drew Tennis Center and was a member of “John’s Ladies” team in the 1970’s. She stopped playing tennis due to a knee injury but remained active by managing the Macon tournament desk for 20 consecutive years during the annual Junior Qualifying Tennis Tournament. Sarah became an active member of Susan G. Komen Center’s Bosom Buddies after experiencing breast cancer in her 60’s and volunteered thousands of hours helping in the office and on the Center’s Board. She was honored by HCA Health System with the Frist Award in 1998 for commitment to Susan G. Komen and support of cancer survivors. Sarah was an ardent, life-long gardener. She enjoyed sharing her “green thumb” knowledge and love of green ceramic frogs with friends and family. Her children, grandchildren, and friends have continued her gardening traditions (except for the occasional overwatering or lack of pruning).
Sarah is preceded in death by her brothers: William B. Jones (Carol) of Round Rock, Texas; Ransom L. Jones (Lucy) of Sarasota, Florida; George K. Jones (Valera) of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Lowell L. Jones (Pattye) of Lookout Mountain, Tennessee. She is survived by her daughter, Tracy Jones Johns (Jerry) of Macon, Georgia; Stephen Earl Jones (Millie) of Forsyth, Georgia; and Kelly Jones Melchiore of Lawrenceville, Georgia. She is also survived by her precious grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who were truly the lights of her life: Taylor Louise Melchiore of Norcross, Georgia; Merritt Jones Graves (Justin) of Pooler, Georgia; Jessie Hannah Johns of Columbia, Missouri; Holland Louisa Jones of Brookhaven, Georgia; David Lane Johns (Alex) of Lawrenceville, Georgia; Abel Guillermo Melchiore Jr. of St. Paul, Minnesota; Leila Elaine Melchiore-Houston of Norcross, Georgia; Camillo Rafael Melchiore of Norcross, Georgia, and Thomas Lane Johns of Lawrenceville, Georgia. She has also left behind devoted friends and caregivers whose days were brightened by her humor and smile.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 4, 2026, at Snow’s Memorial Chapel on Bass Road, with visitation beginning at 10:00 am.
The family requests donations be made to Susan G. Komen or Pine Pointe Hospital of Macon in lieu of flowers.
