I knew Steve from his participation on and, later serving as President of, the GCSU College of Arts and Sciences Alumni Advisory Board. He was a wonderful partner with Georgia College, and we truly are thankful for his and his family's generous support of our educational mission. He will be missed by those of us at GCSU.

I succeeded Steve as chair of ASHRAE' S 90.1 and was his Co-Vice-Chair before that.  Steve was one of the kindest and most considerate people with whom I have ever known.  On the personal side, we spoke often about his church and its evolution since our church was going through the same one at the time.  I always enjoyed dinners with him when we had meetings for the standard and looked forward to it at each one.  I am sure he has been accepted most highly where he is today and has left a lasting presence in all of us.

Steve and I served together on the Arts & Science  Advisory Committee at Georgia College.  It  was a pleasure to serve along side him and he will be sorely missed.  He was kind, efficient and we all appreciated his hard work and intelligence.  We will certainly feel the loss.

Steve was one of the kindest and gentlest people I have ever known. He was a dear friend and generous mentor. He was a true professional while still being powerful force. He will be truly missed and remembered fondly always.

Dear Jane and Family,
When I think of Steve a big smile spreads across my face.  Steve was such a fine person!  I got to enjoy his Bible teachings in the Marshall Class on occasion and in other Bible study groups over the years.  He was a compassionate leader in Grief Share along with Sheri Allen after I lost so many family members in a short time several years ago.  Around the church he was a joyful believer and fun to be around.  I’ll always remember when he went to Texas to be an extra in the Chosen series! This is a time of great loss for so many but we know he is cheering us on in our walk of faith from above.

My deepest sympathy to the family.  Steve was a respected member of the Building Code community and one of my most respected colleagues.  I will miss him

Steve , and his brothers John and Tom along with Ray Sargent and myself spent all the time we could at "the creek" fishing and camping. Hate to have lost touch with the north franklinton bunch.

As volunteer, subcommittee Chair, Vice Chair and Chair of ASHRAE 90.1 (2010 shown above) Steve positively impacted humanity...and this impact will continue for decades. 

More importantly, Steve was the consummate southern gentleman, trusted confidante, tireless volunteer, dear-dear friend, absolutely ethical, calming consensus-builder, gentle spirit, Bible study leader and faithful Christian man who lived as God led him. He always spoke lovingly of all of you -- and expressed concern and love to those of us who were with him. Well done thou good and faithful servant.
Steve and his memories can always be in your hearts...and remind you of the peace that surpasses all understanding.

I am sad to hear of Steve's passing. I really enjoyed working with him in his activities at ASHRAE.  He was one of the nicest folks I've had the opportunity to work with and he will be missed.  Heaven has gained a special angel.  My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I was so sorry to hear of Steve's passing.  I have worked with Steve off and on for over twenty years.  His enthusiasm and passion for codes and standards were infectious.  I will especially miss collaborating with him on topics of interest.

Rolling Stones concert in Chicago, June 2024.  Enjoy every moment, life goes by too fast.

One June 27, 2024 after a long day of  attending the PCI Technical Activities Council meeting in Chicago, a few of us were able to enjoy the Rolling Stones concert at Soldier Field, with last minute tickets.  Sharing the event with Steve made it so much more enjoyable.  When you have the opportunity, enjoy life's every moment.

Steve Skalko is welcomed into heaven as a humble servant. His talent and knowledge are awesome.  But the real beauty of Steve is his ability to take your wrong opinion and turn it into the correct opinion and give you the credit for correct result. Steve is a champion of everything good in this  short journey. God blessed this man and  us and we can look forward to continuing our admiration of Steve. I share everyone's love of Steve and am happy to join him at God's given time

I first met Steve when we are both freshmen at Georgia Tech in 1970. I remember him as a fierce competitor on our fraternity intramural football team, a hard-working student and a genuine brother. His professional career is evidence of his determination, intellect and character. We lost touch over the years but I last talked to him in August and encouraged him to attend his 50th Georgia Tech reunion, and Steve said he would try to make it happen. I was looking forward to that occasion but know that his Reunion with his Savior is the ultimate Celebration. May the Spirit of the Living Christ comfort Jane and Steve's family and friends.

Steve was a wonderful, Christian man. We have known him since High School. Whenever Mark Smith/Lasseter Reunion Committee would ask him to help us Emcee, give the dinner prayer or whatever, he always said yes. We will miss Steve! We enjoyed going to Forest Hills Church with him and Jane. Roy will miss being with him at Men's Group. Prayers to you, Jane, and the rest of the family.

I met Steve a dozen or more years ago through our membership with the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, Greater Atlanta Chapter. 

Steve was a valued member of our chapter and our chapter’s conference committee for many years. He was an active participant at the conferences as well as a thought-provoking conference presenter himself. Steve won the “Conference Committee Member of the Year” award in 2022. Steve was knowledgeable, approachable, and always willing to have a discussion and share ideas with others. His contributions to our society will not be forgotten and will continue to shape our work in meaningful ways.

Our chapter extends our heartfelt condolences to Steve’s family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. He will be greatly missed, but his legacy will live on in the lives he touched.

Steve lived life well. He loved many, showed compassion to everyone, and was committed to make the world a better place by his existence. We don’t have enough Steve Skalkos in society today. He will be missed but left his mark on many. He was a Good Man.

I had the privilege of knowing and working with Steve for over 25 years. He was a joy to collaborate with—always thoughtful, generous, and full of integrity. His presence was large in every room, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who had the honor of working alongside him. He will be sorely missed. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who is grieving this tremendous loss. 💔

I’m so saddened by the loss of Steve. He was one of the first building code consultants I ever met and had the pleasure of knowing. Since 2020, I had the chance to work with him on several building code change proposals, and I’ll always be grateful for his mentorship, thoughtful guidance, and kind advice.

Steve had this amazing talent for sharing his knowledge with everyone around him, making them feel welcome and supported. He was so dedicated to improving building safety through code development, and his contributions will continue to make a lasting impact for years to come.

He’ll be truly missed, and my deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, and colleagues.

I will never forget  Steve.  He helped me so much over the years with his humor and wisdom .  He was truly one of a kind and will be missed.  Linda and I will keep all of you in our prayers.

My heart breaks for the family, though I know in confidence the joy he now shares. The loss to family, community, church and industry is immeasurable. Steve was a mentor, a colleague and a friend. He was one that brought absolute joy every moment he was with you or talking with you.  My life is better having met and served with Steve over the past few decades. He will absolutely be sorely missed.

My condolences to the Skalko family.  I was very saddened to hear this news.  I have known Steve for nearly 30 years.  Early on he was a mentor to me and I have always appreciated his friendship.  It was rare to see him without a smile on his face.  A couple of years ago he texted me a picture of his bulletin board in his office where had a picture of me and my young son (about 1 at the time and 23 now) hanging up for many years.  He was one of the good ones and will be missed by all of us in the building code world.  Rest in peace my friend.
