I just saw his obituary 10 years later, when researching him on Google. My family and I moved from Macon in 1998, and I did not know that he had passed away. Time moves on.
He published my article on "Nursing Is" ...... in his column, and I was always grateful for that.
I got to meet him a few years later and he told me that it almost made the cut for being published in one of his books and that he still wished it had been published in his book. He was such a nice man.
I loved reading his articles-he had a true talent for capturing what Georgia folks are really like.
I look forward to meeting him in heaven one day.

My sincere sympathy to the Boyd family.  I went through 12 years of school in Okmulgee with Bill and remember him best during gradeschool days at Horace Mann School, when we all walked back and forth to school.  He lived fairly close to me.  I admire the way he was able to rise from a difficult situation to have great success in an area where he was so gifted. This man was like the grandpa i didnt have access to, (actual great uncle) he showed me alot, he was always so suave about his business and such an icon to the Macon/ Whole Georgia community. I can remember as a kid his goal was take all the youngins in the family somewhere. I got disney world/sea world/gator land and the Don garlits museum. Incredible vacation for a 9 year old from Tennessee. When i graduated high school he gave me gas money for me and a friend to drive down and spend a week with him and the sweet as candy Aunt Marvalene. (<<greatest cook in the country!)He had a heart for his family and that meant the world. I didnt get to read all his articles in the papers throughout the years but i got plenty of stories from him while watching the golf channel in the den, as i read the closed caption, sound did no good. His stories were so real, I always remember loving life when the big van came to town in which him and Marvalane would jump out to instant hugs from everyone. his handshake was always so strong and tight, he called me killer kyle from day one.  There is so much i can say about this man and he's lived 500 miles away my whole life. To Aunt Marvalene, i love you with all my heart and i bet him and nana are cuttin up right now, she's needed some good Ol' Boyd humor im sure. Miss you Uncle Bill! And to Josh, if ya need anything bro give ur TN cousin a call.

While I didn't know Bill Boyd personally, he felt like a friend because of the way he shared his life in his columns. I enjoyed reading about Marvelous Marvalene, Joe and Wanda and Bill's momma and step-daddy. Middle Georgia is fortunate that Bill Boyd decided to make Macon his hometown after retiring from the Marines. Thank you Marvalene and family for sharing this wonderful man with our community.May God bless and keep you during this time of loss.

Marvalene, Joe and Wanda... Words can't seem to be enough to let you know how much Ol' Boyd meant to me. The first time I met him was years before my Telegraph days when he wrote a column on me about the Squirrel eating lunch with me at McDonalds. I knew then he had to be a one of a kind. Then later entered the Telegraph days working with him. The many times he would stop by my desk and talk, tell stories and jokes and was so full of happiness and life. ALWAYS smiling. He showed how much he loved people when my elderly aunt couldn't make one of the OVER 75 Parties due to being in the hospital but wanted a t-shirt so bad. I asked him to get me one for her and he said "I will and I will take it to her myself to the hospital".. He did and she was overwhelmed with joy that Bill Boyd would do that for her.. That's the kind of person he was. I'll always remember him pulling up to the curbside of the Telegraph with that trunk load of "TY" beanie bears and would sell them like hot cakes to all of us...and especially when he talked my sister into paying $350 (or $250) for the collectors TY "Princess Di" bear..ONLY he could have done that... I could write all day of his kindness espcially at Christmas when he'd bring the cakes to the newsroom from the Mennonites.. AND ya'll would always have "me" one to "take home". I have ALL his books BUT the one he tried to tell me about that I would really love was "this murder mystery book" he said.. telling me all about going to all these towns and digging up the past. Turns out it was actually about MY KIN FOLKS... Blind Obedience is my great great great uncles and cousins that did the crime!!! WOW.. I had no idea... I'll always and Forever lOve and cherish all the stories and memories with Boyd. Marvalene I know you are going to miss him. I'm going to miss ya'll coming through the Telegraph and I know the last few times you came with tears in your eyes because of the pain and suffering he was going through.. I had prayed so hard that we'd have him through Aug. 7 to see "75" but as you said not in suffering and pain did we want him to stay. God knows best. I love you and I hope you'll still come by and see us at the Telegraph. Bill left a legacy of GOOD TIMES and STUFF to read and I'm pulling out all his books and RE-READ once again... He will forever be in my heart..... and you to Marvalene..
ol' Boyd's funeral was bitter sweet...red, white, and blue flag and Marines, many FRIENDS dressed in bright colors TRYING to hold back the TEARS, giggles and laughs from "the old stories and memories shared", great black choir singing "It Is Well With My Soul" and "Amazing Grace"... and a comforting thought of KNOWING that this wasn't about a final GOOD BYE but a "SEE YA LATER, OL' BOYD!!!!!!!!... You WERE a ONE OF A KIND....

In the short 20 years that I knew Bill I always considered him a " true friend". Those are far and few between. I'm not really sure that I have another one.

Bill Boyd was one of a select few people I studied carefully as a young journalist. His writing, but more his personality, helped shape my career. I am glad I had a chance to know Bill and enjoy his storytelling. Boyd family, you are blessed to have had such a man among you.

I met Mr. Boyd the first time at a book signing for "Stepdaddy".  I also met him when he did a superb article for the Scott School Reunion.  He was a very generous and kind man.  The first thing I read when he was still doing the column in The Telegraph was his stories -- and he really knew how to tell a story.  "Blind Obedience" is a book I have that has been passed around to many, all of who come back with a statement of how they'll never forget the story.  He knew how to write so he touched the heart of whomever was reading his work.  May God bless the family he has left behind -- it was very obvious he loved you all.

Such a sad day for your family and such a great loss for so many. I met Mr. Boyd in the early 80's he wrote an artical about my son Matt 4, daughter Stephanie 6, and their fishing experince at Crystal Lake with sewing thread and Christmas tree hook.

Ol' Bill will be missed.  He made a brief comeback to write a piece on Coach Bobby Gentry of Hawkinsville and I was honored that he asked to interview me for the article.  He also, with a short e-mail, told me to check out SNOPES before I sent messages around through the never-ending "FORWARDS."  He was right and I still remember his admonision to do so.  May his family be comforted in his absence from their daily lives.

I am so sorry for your loss.  I loved reading his columns and for my 10th wedding anniversary, my husband called Bill and told him about me and he immediately wanted to do a story about us to wish us a happy 10th.  I was pregnant with my 7th child at that time.  He was a lot of fun talking to and his comments and amazement of our family was so great. We had a great time.  His article was great and full of humor, and then he did a follow up at Christmas time after our last baby had been born.  We will always cherish that article.  I thought about him last week as we are celebrating our 25th anniversary in a couple of weeks.  He was an awesome man....I will never forget meeting and talking to him.

May God bless your family during this time of sorrow.  I met Bill in 1991 when my sister (Penny Smith Terrell) was battling cancer. I remember being so scared when I first met him at the office and that was truly momentarily, because after that moment I felt a true friendship with Bill.  He wrote the most precious, sweet and honorable story about my sister and her young family. The love and support this article brought to our family was overwhelming. Sadly, we lost my sister to this terrible disease and I still today, think of Bill waiting on me to get to the funeral home at visitation....so he could talk with me.  After all those years, that moment is still very real and near to my heart. I will certainly cherish the book he generously gave to my family but most of all I will cherish his sincerity and graciousness he showed our family. I hope all the memories people share with you will bring you comfort.

I landed in GA in Dec 1993, transplanted from Sacramento CA, and soon found Ol Bill in the Macon Telegraph.  I loved his articles in the paper and followed them religiously.  I also delighted in seeing articles after he retired in 1998 when they appeared occasionally.  I am sorry to learn that he is gone now.  My sympathy and thoughts and prayers are with all of your family at this most difficult time.  Bill was a man loved by many and a real character in his own right.  If he trained Gris to follow in his footsteps, he did a masterful job. God Bless all of you.

Marvalene,  I hold so many fond memories of you and Bill.  From first meeting you at McKibben Lane when my boys were in school there, to reading Bill's columns, you both always put a smile on my face.  My fondest memory of Bill's columns was when he purchased my mother's car - Big Red - and wrote a story about it.  She was delighted and so were we.  Our love is with you now and always.

Bill used to visit the nursing home in Hawkinsville on a regular basis. All the resident's loved to see him come. He wrote an article about my husband riding in the farmer's tractorcade years ago and then later wrote a follow up about me & my husband. Those stories are part of our legacy and will be passed on thru the years to our grandchildren. He was truly a caring and remarkable man who will be missed. Thanks Bill!

I remember when we first met the Boyd Family my grandfather Alfred Fambro was having his 90 something birthday.And he wrote a newspapers article/birthday section on the older birthday in the Macon area he wrote about"The Mayor" of Lamar Rd.from that on our family became friends.He put something about my grandfather in one of his books.Mr.Boyd and his wife would come to my grandfather birthday parties,he was a great writer he made you feel as if you knew the people in his articles some of them made you cry and other made you laugh....I often read his book about granddaddy it give you a time to wish for the ole time.Mrs.Boyd and Family Thanks for sharing him with us.

I met Bill when he wrote articles about my father, Walter Rogers, while he was taking care of my sister, Rubye, who had been hit by a log truck back in March 1976.  He was a very thoughtful, caring person.  I had the honor of having him come to my home when my sister passed away.  He had a lot of great qualities that helped him have friends everywhere he went.  My condolences to Marvelene, Joe and the rest of the family.  We all have been blessed to have had him in our lives.

My granmother lived for the 75 and over birthday parties and speaking to Bill Boyd. I had the honor and privilage of escorting her to a number of these events. She loved Bill and all of his family. First we lost Lewis and now Bill. Who will tell the stories now? May God bless the Bill Boyd family in their time of grief.

I am deeply saddened by the news. He was a one of a kind and my prayers go out to his wife, children and family and friends.   I had the great pleasure of meeting him in 2001 when he did a story about the car accident my sister, our children and I were involved in on I75.  The intent of the article was to find the people who helped us and he accomplished that and so much more.  What was supposed to be an interview was more like a meeting with an old friend or family member and the sharing of stories – ours and his.  He was a wonderful man, with a good sense of humor.  He had a love for God, family and country.  He touched so many lives and I know he will be deeply missed.

Just another big fan of Ol' Bill. The way he wrote his stories made you feel like you really knew all those folks. We really lost a jewel. I wish God's blessings to his family.

I would like to extend my condolences to Mr. Boyds' family.

Grandpa, you will be greatly missed. My son, Josh could not have asked for a more loving and attentive grandfather. Josh learned so much by having Bill as his grandfather and I can certainly say, he has been shaped into the wonderful young man he is today because he had a grandfather who truly adored him. May God walk with you and all you family. You will be greatly missed. Love you much grandpa!

Ol' Bill, no one could tell a story quite like you. May you and Muley keep Heaven laughing with all of y'all's antics.

Bill Boyd was more than just a writer for a newspaper. I remember loving his stuff and reading it as an aspiring "journalist" and wanting to be just like Old Bill. I loved his stories and loved hearing about life. He was a great example!

I was saddened to receive the phone call from Aunt Marvalene telling me that Uncle Bill had passed. His gruff exterior disguised the softie that he really was. And let's not forget his ribald sense of humor. He could get the most staid and composed person to laugh out loud. A few weeks ago, even as he was approaching the end of his time on earth, he was still joking - about himself, about others. As a young girl, I would listen to him talk and marvel at his memory and all his experiences. It seemed he had done it all. The world has lost a wonderful person. I'll miss you, Uncle Bill.

I met Bill and his wife Marvalene when I worked at the paper. Didn't get to know him very well personally, but he always had a smile and spoke in passing. His stories and his achievements made you feel as if you knew him personally though. My condolences go out to Marvalene and his family.

TY, Mr. Boyd, for your many columns I have read over the years. May God bless your family.

My deepest sympathy to family, friends, and newspaper family.  I feel a profound loss by my association of reading and sharing his stories.  He could draw you into the plot so easily.  He became family.  I grieve with you.

My condolences to Bill Boyd's family and especially to Marvalene. I greatly admired his wit and wisdom and always looked forward to his visits. He will be sorely missed by all of us at the antique mall. Rest in peace, Bill. :-)
