She was born on April 5, 1927, in Dundee, Scotland, to Alexander and Alice McLaren. She moved with her husband Frederick R. Shepherd to the United States in 1955, and for the past 46 years, she was a resident of Madison, CT.
Betty was an active member of The First Congregational Church of Madison for many years. Her interests included crafting, knitting, cooking and singing in the choir at church. She traveled extensively and went home to her native Scotland on many occasions. She devoted her life to raising and caring for her family, and in later years, cared for her beloved husband Fred, who passed away in 2004.
Although Betty’s health had failed in recent years, she continued to have a fighting spirit and a witty sense of humor. She was loved by everyone who knew her and will be missed by many.
Mrs. Shepherd is survived by her sister, Marjorie Rennie of Johannesburg, South Africa, and four daughters, Frances L. Doran of Guilford, CT; Lois R. August of Stony Creek, CT; Helen L. Shepherd of Wilton, NH; Laura R. Shepherd Deykerhoff and her husband Paul Deykerhoff of Little Silver, NJ; as well as three grandchildren, Morgan and Graham Bradler, and Eric Deykerhoff.
A memorial service will be held for friends and family on Saturday, September 29, 2012, 11:00 am at The First Congregational Church of Madison, 26 Meetinghouse Lane, Madison, CT, with a reception immediately following in Hubley Hall.
