It was no surprise on October 24th, a double rainbow graced the sky symbolizing Cindy’s final goodbye. She loved “The Wizard of Oz” and wanted us to know she landed “Over the Rainbow.” It was just like her to be concerned about those she left behind. Cindy was gifted with the ability to make new friends everywhere she went. Her caring and spunky personality touched everyone in the room; that or her infectious laugh that could make anyone smile, even on a bad day. A kind and thoughtful soul that will surely be missed by all who knew her.
Many of her childhood memories are from growing up in Wethersfield, CT. She and her siblings later moved to Madison, CT., where she graduated from Daniel Hand High in 1976. She loved to play the flute in Daniel Hand’s Tiger marching band (donning the uniform, complete with the big white hat). She went on to study computer science before finding her calling in health care as a registered Radiologic Technologist (RT). Her expert radiography and mammography skills were complimented by her compassion and gentleness. It wasn’t just a job, but a passion of Cindy’s. She lived for her patients. Her skills were best measured by the number of returning of patients whom often requested her specifically. She had a rare gift of alleviating the fears of anxious patients, especially the elderly.
Cindy loved her career, and it was here she found the love of her life, Michael Cashin. Many of their weekend “getaways” consisted of lake-front views, boating, fine dining, and living their best life together at Lake Pocotopaug in East Hampton, CT. This is where their dreams came true, and the happiest memories were made. Soulmate doesn’t begin to describe the bond they had. Cindy predeceased her beloved husband Michael by only a few hours; they are now at peace together.
Cindy is survived by cherished children; daughter Emily Wininger (Matt), grandson Colton and son Scott Wininger. She also leaves behind her mother-in-law Janet Cashin, and siblings Mary Nichols (Larry), Kathy Pitura (Steve), Soozi Flannigan, Molly Baldo (Dean), Robby Flannigan (Lana) as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her parents, “Flip” and Ann Doyle-Flannigan, and beloved older brother, John F. Flannigan.
Cindy will be missed for many things, her quick, witty remarks, sense of humor, love of chocolate and her younger brother’s cooking, making sure to send birthday cards, and her generosity. She will be missed for her “Rabbit Rabbit” texts the first of every month. Her love for her family, and how much she loved being a Meema. She would proudly show off her grandson to every person she met. Cindy was a fighter to the end. Despite multiple medical challenges that made simple daily tasks overwhelming, she met these challenges with tremendous courage strength, and the will to live. These qualities will forever inspire us.
Please join us in celebrating her life and memory on Thursday, October 30th, from 4-7pm at the Swan Funeral home located at 825 Boston Post Rd, Madison, CT, 06443. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations towards her grandson Colton’s higher education fund through this link
