Frank Allen Dering, 94, of Wallingford, Connecticut, passed away peacefully on May 3, 2026. Born on February 16, 1932, in New Haven, Connecticut, Frank lived a long and full life rooted in family, dedication, and quiet strength.
Frank was raised in East Haven, where he spent most of his life before moving to Wallingford in 2024. He graduated from East Haven High School in 1950 and went on to attend the University of Connecticut. Frank built a long and steady career at Thermal Acoustics in West Haven, where he worked for over 30 years before retiring in 1996.
Known affectionately as “Popop,” Frank was a man of few words, yet deeply intelligent, proud, and steadfast. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures—his daily cups of coffee, a glass of milk with lunch, and time spent with those he loved. He was a longtime member of the Indian Neck Yacht Club and took great pride in his boat, the Alexia Marie, enjoying many years on the water. Frank also loved fishing, bowling, and playing chess.
Frank is survived by his beloved wife, Marie Dering, lovingly known as “Ma.” He is also survived by his stepson, James C. Tingley III, and his wife, Melanie Hofer; his son-in-law, Matthew Levin, and his wife, Diana Levin; his cherished grandchildren, Alexia Levin-Liberator and her husband, Nick Liberator, who are expecting his great-grandchild in June; Joshua Levin and his girlfriend, Jenna D’Ottavio; and Liam Twohill; and his brother, Richard Dering, and his wife, Sondra Dering; sister-in-law Henney Scott, widow of the late William Scott; along with many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his stepdaughter, Kimberly Levin; his father, Frank Dering, and his wife, Gertrude Dering; his mother, Mabel Moore; his half-brother, William Scott, and his half-sister, Beverly Olsen.
Frank also leaves behind his beloved cat, Mittens, who loved curling up on his lap for their restful afternoon naps.
In lieu of calling hours, an intimate graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 6, at 10:30 a.m. at All Saints Cemetery in North Haven, where he will be laid to rest alongside Kimberly Levin. Family and friends are welcome to attend.
In honor of Frank’s life, donations may be made to CT Votes for Animals (ctvotesforanimals.org).
Frank’s family remembers him with love and gratitude, holding close the words shared between him and his beloved wife: “We had a really good life together,” and, with hope, “until we see each other again.”
