George A. Johnson Jr., of Madison, CT, died suddenly after a brief illness on Wednesday March 19, 2014 at Middlesex Hospital, he was 84. George was born on March 25, 1929 in Bridgeport, CT. He attended Stratfield Elementary School, Roger Ludlowe High School and Upsala College. In 1955 he married Nancy F. Caldwell, and together they had 3 children, David (wife Lynn Skene), Sarah (husband Robert Trombetta) and Peter (wife Donna Caulfield). George worked as an executive at the Aetna, Hartford Insurance Group, George A. Johnson Insurance Agency, CT National Bank, Middlesex Mutual Assurance Company, and New London County Assurance Companies. George served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and retired as a Major in the U.S. Army Reserves. He served as the first Chairman of the Monroe Town Council and was a CT State Representative where he was influential in the passage of insurance legislation. He was on the Monroe Board of Police Commissioners and the Monroe Town Hall Building Committee. He served as a member of many local civic organizations including the Jaycees, Monroe Lions, Masons, Boy Scouts of America, American Legion, and the Elks. He was a member of the Madison and Clinton Art Societies and the Clinton Country Club. Besides golf and painting, George enjoyed music and played Carnegie Hall with the Swing Timers and was in the West Point Army Band. He also enjoyed traveling, buying cars and spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed especially by his loving wife Nancy and their six beloved grandchildren, Ivan and Alexis Johnson, Lauren and David Trombetta and Tommy and Michael Johnson. Calling hours will be held on Sunday March 23, 2014 from 1-4 pm at the Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Road, Madison, CT. A private burial will be held at a later date. Memorial donations may be made in George’s name to the Connecticut Trees of Honor Memorial, Inc. P.O. Box 234, Windsor, CT 06095, a local member of Wreaths Across America.
