Gunnar Johnson

Gunnar Robert Johnson of Madison, beloved husband of the late Eileen Johnson, passed away peacefully February 23, 2022 at Branford Hospice. Gunnar was born in New Haven, the son of the late Gustave and Elizabeth (Bergfelt) Johnson. He is survived by his brother, Carl and wife Barbara, and extended family. Gunnar’s military achievements include three Bronze Stars earned while serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Gunnar served on the Madison Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, and was their President for three years. Gunnar and Eileen were tireless volunteers for the Chamber, Rotary and the town of Madison that they loved so much.

For his work, he's been recognized by the Chamber,(Citizen of the Year in 2005; Member of the Year in 2001 and 2008), Madison Jaycees, (Distinguished Service Award), Madison Rotary, (two-time Paul Harris Fellowship award-winner), and the Westbrook Elks, (Elk of the Year). For over forty years, Gunnar and Eileen owned and operated the Gunnar Johnson Select School of Dance. They were also Directors of the Dance Educators of America and earned the title of Harvest Moon Ball Champions, possibly their proudest accomplishment and fondest memory. Eileen has been waiting impatiently for her next dance with him.

Graveside services will be private. A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 1, 2022 in the North Madison Congregational Church, 1271 Durham Rd., Madison, CT 06443, starting at 4:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Eileen Johnson Memorial Fountain Fund, c/o Madison Chamber of Commerce, American Heart Association or Smilow Cancer Hospital
