John “Johnny” Mack Barnes, born on July 29, 1941, in Coleman, Texas, raised in Arvada, Colorado, and who spent most of his life in Connecticut, died peacefully on July 27, 2025 - just two days shy of his 84th birthday.
He is survived by his three loving children: Wes Barnes of Madison, CT; Andrea Olson of Putnam, CT; and Crystal Fleming of Westfield, MA; his daughter-in-law, Candace Barnes of Madison, CT; his son-in-law, Bradford Fleming of Westfield, MA; and eight, cherished grandchildren: Tyson, Trenton, Lily, Ashley, Elizabeth, Alexandra, Isabelle, and, Thomas.
John proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a submariner aboard the USS Sea Owl. His time in the service forged lifelong friendships, and he remained closely connected with many of his shipmates throughout his life. A dedicated veteran, he was an active member of the American Legion and deeply respected his fellow servicemen and women, especially veterans of foreign wars.
Gifted with a natural talent for mechanics, John built a career in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning repair following his time in the Navy. He eventually founded his own successful business - Barnes Mechanical Contractors - which served both residential and commercial clients throughout central Connecticut.
John had many passions, including restoring classic 1966 Ford Mustangs, solving complex mechanical puzzles, and traveling to reconnect with friends across the country. But of all his interests, fishing brought him the most joy. Whether aboard one of his own boats or out with a friend, John treasured the quiet solitude of fishing on the open waters.
He will be remembered as a devoted father and grandfather, a man of sharp wit, unwavering honesty, and uncommon kindness. John touched the lives of everyone he met, and left behind a legacy of laughter, love, and integrity.
A memorial service celebrating John’s life will be held on August 7th, 2025, at 12:00 PM at the State Veteran’s Cemetery in Middletown, Connecticut. All who knew and loved John are warmly invited to join in honoring his memory.
