My Dear and Bestest Friend in the whole wide world,
That is you Lillian.  I always referred to you as the bestest!  And yes, I know it is not a word but my word to describe my friend.  I also frequently said I am blessed to have you as my friend and everyone should have a friend like Lillian.  You had many friends but you always made me feel special.  
This beautiful friendship began the summer of 1978 in the mortgage origination department of New Haven Savings Bank.  It was not friends at first sight.  We have told this story so many times.  You thought I was a PIA.  Even then the true Lillian was evident you were agreeable and nice from the moment I met you.  I would often approach you to do a last minute Truth and Lending and you would smile and say yes!  Being new to the bank you invited me to have lunch with you and the girls.  And as they say the rest is history.
Lillian you opened your heart, home and family to me.  I cherish so many dinners with you and the boys.  As well as the many family and friend parties.  You have always known how to throw an awesome party!  What stands out most is Christmas time and decorating the Charlie Brown Christmas Tree you would cut down every year!  Your boys became my boys too.  I changed their diapers, I rocked them to sleep, I fed them (I was shocked you did not boil the bottles!) the best hands on training for when my time came to be a Mother.  I was so heartened and privileged when you asked me to be Godmother to Aaron.  I have great memories seeing the boys grow up.
Then I met my husband and you met my mother-in-law before I did.  You were my bridesmaid; you were there when I had my boys.  We have shared the ups and downs of raising our children.  We have shared many a proud moment as mothers. 
When I moved to Cincinnati you were only a phone call away.  I called to say hello, I called to laugh and share a special moment, I called to cry.  You had a special way to make me smile before we said good bye.  
Then you played match maker.  And introduce me to Richard.  You were so happy to bring us together.  I have wonderful vacation memories with you and Doug!  And the many delicious dinners we had weather going to a restaurant or at the Stanton Inn.  I will always remember our times together as exceptional and truly treasured.
These are just a few memories of our lifelong friendship.  I am blessed to have shared a wonderful friendship and privileged to call you my friend.  My memories of our friendship will remain with me until we meet again.
I love you Lillian, may you rest peacefully in the arms of our Lord.

In those post-Katrina days, I called her our "blond angel in CT." When our evacuation route from New Orleans finally landed us in No. Branford, she greeted us at our office with open arms and the words "welcome home!" We miss her these days, but I know that she is laughing and decorating those pearly gates as the Good Lord smiles on her and chuckles a bit. May she rest in peace and glory forever.

Now it is my turn. Lillian was my sister-in-law but in our hearts we were always sisters, for almost 30 years. Sista Sista is what we called each other and we so meant it.  We never ended a phone call without saying "love ya sista" and I thank god for that everyday. Lillian was also my best friend. My heart is broken and empty... I miss her more than words can ever express. Always a ray of sunshine, always words of encouragement, always there for you, always postive...it will be better tomorrow, I promise.... 
When will this pain subside...I miss you so much.  You were such a role model Lillian to your goddaughter Tessa.  She looked more like you than me, we always joked she was your daughter.  She has your sensitive caring ways, so much like you. I will never forget the love you sent her all these years and I want you back. We all want you back.

Here it is 2 weeks since you have left me and I miss you every day.  I went to my colander and once again a St. Patrick Shamrock with I love you on Saturday, the day before you left me.  You were always full of surprises, notes in my workbook on, the dash of the car, in the refrigerator, in my coffee cup and on my windshield. They really made me feel special, and you as well were special to me. I will always love you and you will always be in my heart and soul. It was a great 10 years. I love you again.

 Today I have the honor of delivering a eulogy for Lillian.  Before I speak about what Lillian meant to everyone, let me share some of what Lillian meant to me.  I met Lillian in 1984, we became friends and have been an important part of each other's lives ever since.  She called me Gina Bina and I called her Lilliana.  She is my best friend and the sister I never had.  I know I will never have another friendship in my life that will be like the friendship we shared.  With this friendship I have been truly blessed.  Lillian and I spoke most days.  Our conversations would always be interesting, even if there was nothing important being discussed.  When we were together we would talk endlessly about our lives and what was going on or sometimes we would just sit silently, not having to say a word.  When life dealt us lemons, we made lemonade…together, albeit sometimes that lemonade had ice in it and involved a blender poolside.  We would laugh and cry together but no matter what, we loved and trusted each other without question.  We saw each other at our best and at our worst and had many, many happy, crazy times to remember and cherish.  It was only recently that we pushed a Hummel's Hot Dog cart down Route 1 in Clinton to get it over to her house for a summer party.  We were doubled over laughing the entire walk home through bumper to bumper traffic one Friday night.  I could not possibly share 28 years of our friendship in a few minutes but it was full and rich, the way Lillian made everyone feel who had the good fortune to know her. 
Lillian was a daughter, a sister, a mother, an aunt, a wife and a friend to everyone she knew.  Her “pa pa” as she called her father was the man she grew up respecting, came to rely upon as she raised her family and was always there for her.  I can remember countless days when we would visit his house, sit out on the dock and soak up the sun.  He actually would trust us to take the boat out by ourselves even after the time we took it out and returned to the dock minus the anchor.  She cherished her time spent with her Dad, going to breakfast, sometimes the casino, it was all special.  Lillian lost her mother a few years back but there was always a Gladys or as she was known, Sandy, story to share.  She passed on to Lillian her love for animals.  Lillian's sister, Vanessa her brother Al, Al's wife Sharon and their daughter Tessa, who is the daughter Lillian never had, she loved you Tessa Bessa, were also an important part of her life, family was important to Lillian and she worked hard to maintain traditions.  
Lillian as you all know was the mother of 4 boys, Eddie, Tommy, Joey and Aaron.  Each boy is very different and has a different personality but each boy carries the traditions and family values that Lillian instilled in them.  She was a great mother who put aside everything and made many sacrifices in order to provide her sons with a happy life growing up.  One year when money was tight she was determined to have a family vacation.  Lillian packed the 4 boys and a tent and went camping……it rained the entire time.  Camping in the rain in a tent with 4 boys would seem crazy to most, to Lillian it was just being a mom. She instilled in each of the boys her love for life and living each day to the fullest.  She did all she could to make holidays special and special days holidays.  Through the years Lillian has become more than a mother to her boys, I know they consider her their friend as well.  Each one of the boys have special memories to carry with them of their mother.  Lillian raised her sons to follow their heart, to pursue their dreams and most importantly, to be true to themselves.  She was so proud of every accomplishment they made and supported all their choices and the paths they took in life.  Eddie lives his life as his mother did, enjoying all the things that make him happy.  Tommy set out to and completed his education.  Joey is in the Air Force and is currently stationed in Afghanistan.  Aaron, her baby, has Lillian's strength, I know Lillian is watching down and is so proud of the way he has handled himself this past week.  Aaron will be certain to continue with all the traditions that were so important to Lillian.    
After years of dedicating her life to her boys, she finally decided that it was time to begin to focus on herself and the possibility of a relationship with someone to share her life.  Lillian opened her heart and eventually met Doug or Ron as most people call him.  When Doug came into her life Lillian was like a teenaged girl, so giddy and happy.  She was over the moon for him and there was no turning back.   Doug gave Lillian the opportunity to experience things she had not had the opportunity to really experience in her life, particularly travel.  They would go on cruises or flying to a certain destination, she especially loved Costa Rica.  They both had a love for entertaining.  Many of us will always remember the larger than life parties held in their yard by the pool, kick off on Memorial Day straight through until Labor Day and then a big New Year's Eve bash.  Parties at the Warner's house were a special event, most definitely due to the special attention to everything and everyone by Lil and Doug.  I will forever miss being over the house and hearing Doug yell “Lillian” or having him call her cell phone countless times when she and I were out and I would have to say to him, ever so graciously, “you get her all the time, this is my time with her”.  They were married a mere 9 ½ years but in that time they shared a bond that grew stronger as time passed.  Lillian loved him more each year.  Lillian saw in Doug her true love, her “king” as she would say.  Doug, thank you for making my girlfriend so happy.  Doug's Mother, Alix, was also important to Lillian.  She and Alix had a special relationship.  
Lillian was a woman of faith.  It was important for her to attend Church each Sunday.  She would turn to God to help guide her through any challenges in life.  I am certain she was greeted and guided and not fearful as she took this final journey.
Lillian loved the ocean and loved nature in general.  She would spend her free time taking a walk outside.  Her walks were always an adventure and a place to reflect.  She loved the animals she met along the way, especially the bunnies she would see, they were good luck.  Lillian even loved the raccoons that would attempt to tear apart their outdoor kitchen during the summer.  She would provide food and refuge to the animals that most of us consider pests.  She would greet all animals with a “hi guys” and watch in wonder with a smile as they did their thing.  Every year there are doves that come to nest and have their babies up on the deck at the house.  I can only imagine the doves come so close to the house because they feel comfortable and safe with Lillian, a feeling that has been felt by all of us.
Another big part of Lillian's life was her career.  She was dedicated to her career at the Bank and to her coworkers and as a result, was well respected.  Especially important to her were her “clients” as she always referred to her customers.  I am sure some of Lillian's clients are here today.  Lillian's passing will undoubtedly be a huge loss to them as well.  Lillian made all customers feel special regardless of how long she knew them.  She not only tended to their banking needs but took the time to get to personally know each one of them and their lives.  That special quality she had, to embrace everyone she met and to make them feel they were special and important, is what set Lillian aside from others.  If you were having a problem or concern, Lillian would make the time to listen, if you were happy and celebrating something, Lillian would take the time to celebrate with you and no one was ever more genuinely happy for others than Lillian.  She did not know how to be envious of others, she only knew how to share and give. 
This past week has been rough and I know I have and I am sure most others in this church have asked the question “what will I do without Lillian?”  Well, after asking that question repeatedly I have figured out that before Lillian left us, she prepared us.  We were probably unaware of it at the time, but we should all take everything Lillian has taught us through the way she lived her life and apply those lessons to our own life in some way.  That will be Lillian's legacy.

I was utterly stunned recently when the first news of Lillian's passing was by means of a note regarding her death posted in the window at the East River branch. As the new Personnel guy at New Haven Savings Bank, I liked to tell myself that I had the knack to pick out the super folks working there....that's why I initially couldn't appreciate that she had left us for a better place.....my somewhat belated sympathies to all those who knew..and loved..her. Rest in peace, 'Diamond Lil!'

Dear Doug,  i am truly sorry for your loss!  We loved Lillian - she was very concerned for her customers!  She went beyond her call of duty.  She tried so hard to get a refinance for my brother, whom you know from Midway Motors.  He said he has met you several times, Frank (Butch) Cavallaro and I send our condolences!

TRULY A LOVE STORY

Doug wanted everyone to know how he and Lillian started their journey.
Doug stormed into the Bank one afternoon with an urgent issue. Lillian was able to diffuse the situation. He wanted out a happy customer and smitten. The next evening, Lillian was running the drive-thru window when Doug appeared.He asked her out on a date. I quickly received a telephone call. She didn't know what to say to him. I told her to go for it because he probably won't take no for any answer. The next day, Lillian had a change of heart. Doug soon realized that we were friends.The telephone calls and visits soon started. Through our many conversations I got to know Doug. That's when I realized they were basically the same: warm, generous and caring, a friend anyone would be lucky to have. Lillian finally said yes and had a wonderful time. She was like a teenager. The romance blossomed. The rest is history. Lillian is truly an angel up in heaven as she was an angel here on earth. I will miss my friend.

Lillian loved you more than life. She treasured every moment she spent with you. She truly knew you were special and you made her feel the same way. Don't forget I'm a good listener so if you ever need an ear, you know where to find me.Thank you for being you and making my friend the happiest she has been in the last ten years.

First I'd like to thank everyone for being here today.  I know if my mother were here to see this sight, she'd be blown away by everyone that is here, realizing all of the lives she's impacted.
 As many of you know, right now I'm in Afghanistan.  It's difficult for me to feel the gravity of this situation as my life back home seems to enter this sort of preservation when I am away, thought I fully realize that life at home marches on.  With all of my heart I want to be here with you today to celebrate the life and memory of my mother.  However, in my heart, I know it's important that I stay here to continue our mission and honor my commitment to what we do.  A while back, while serving in the Marines in Iraq, I understood firsthand the important role that every individual played, and I told myself that if something happened back home I would remain in the fight regardless of what the situation was.  Never would I have imagined that something like this would have happened, but still, my feelings today, here, are no different.  Believe me, it was a hard line to draw and the emotions that will undoubtedly ensue are ones I will learn to manage as I encounter them.  So for now, what I can and will do is dedicate some thoughts to her and honor her memory.
 Now, let's focus on why everyone is here now.  We come here to honor Lillian.  How do we say goodbye to a person that has positively touched so many of us?  To a person who managed to maintain a sometimes seemingly inexplicable constant state of bliss.  To a woman who no doubt defined the role of hostess with the mostess…  How do four brothers say goodbye to their mother?  How does a husband say goodbye to a wife?  I truly do not know how, nor will I try to entertain or justify any such reasoning.  
Today we attempt to say goodbye together, but saying goodbye isn't all we are doing.  While we may be letting go of Lillian as we knew her in the physical sense, we keep her spirit alive together and individually by the memories we share.  Let's think about this for a minute, about each and every memory we have of her and the ones we share with her.  For me, I have 32 years of memories.  My brother Ed, Tom and Aaron have 36, 34 and 29 years of memories.  Combined that is a total of 131 years of memories.  Factor in the 60 years of memories my grandfather has, the years shared by her younger siblings, our uncle  Al and Aunt Vanessa… think about how long you have known Lillian, let's add that to the mix.  There is clearly no shortage of memories.  So long as we are all still here, sharing together, there are enough combined memories in this room alone to keep her alive through not only our lifetimes, but generations to follow.  That's how we keep her spirit alive, together.
While we grieve through all of this, it is also important to understand that life does go on… we will continue to move forward.  The pains that accompany such a great loss will subside and as we continue to grow new memories will be made dulling the sting of less desirable ones.  There is, however, no doubt in my mind that no matter how much we move on or how much the memories may fade, the impact Lillian has made on all of us is great enough where her light will find a way to shine through indefinitely.
I wish everyone luck, health and happiness.  I look forward to seeing you upon my return.

My first memory of Lillian was at Cherrystones Restaurant in Old Lyme several years ago. Ron and Lillian hired me to perform at their annual Labor Day party ever since. They treated me not as hired help but as family, because that's the kind of people they are. When Ron left a message that she passed away I couldn't have been more shocked!!!! 

My last memory of Lillian was this last Labor day. They had lost power for I believe 10 days and got it back on Saturday at 6 O'Clock. This was Sunday Labor Day weekend. When I arrived at their house Lillian was cleaning the pool and wanting to take a shower before the party. She said that because of the power outage she had to take cold showers all week but now it can be a warm shower, but "I'm too hot".

As Ron said to me on the phone on Sunday: "Only The Good Die Young". Ron needs us all now more than ever... I know...Bob Mel

The sign on the top of the tv " all because two people fell inlove" " happy wife, happy life" " it doesn't matter where you go in life, it's who you have beside you"  you will always be by my side now and forever. Ronnie, I know that Lillian was the light of your life without a doubt, and her sudden loss must be devastating for you. Words feel inadequate. I know you are a better man for having had her in your life, and you have enjoyed life's richness through the love you two shared. Know that we are here for you to help you get through this inconceivable loss. I can't take the pain away, but know that as much as it hurts, that too is a testament of the depth of your love for each other. Lillian will always be remembered by everyone she touched as a wonderful, caring, and amazing woman.  I had the pleasure of knowing her and working with her for many years.  I will miss her and will never forget her smile, her optimism, and the beauty she created everyday.  My heartfelt sympathy to her family and everyone who knew and loved her. You will always be remembered.

Lillian will be missed by so many people and I am one of those people. Whenever I came to her home, she always greeted me with open arms and a warm smile. She always made me feel welcomed and had such a positive air about her. Even though she is no longer with us, she will forever love in our hearts.

I am at a loss for words..........actually I don't think the words to describe our friendship have been coined yet.
