away unexpectedly on December 12, 2015 with her loving daughter Lisa by her
side.
Mary was born on July 12, 1929 in New York City, to the late Lazarus and
Helen Hadjopoulos. She grew up in Manhattan and received her degree in Art
History from Elmira College.
Mary first came to Madison with her parents and sister, Phoebe, in the summer
of 1930. They frequented the Madison Beach Hotel and in the summer of ’41,
moved into their summer home on Island Avenue.
Summers were a wonderful time for the Morla family, enjoying the Madison
Beach Club and husband Charlie loving his weekend golf games. In 1984, she
moved permanently into their summer home and began working at Our Lady
Of Mercy School. She was OLM’s secretary for over 16 years where she was
loved by student’s and teachers alike.
As an active member of the Madison Beach Club, Mary chaired the Follies for
several years. She was an avid swimmer, and helped establish the annual
Beach Club swim to Tuxis Island. She was a voracious reader and film buff,
visiting Madison’s Scranton Library on a weekly basis.
Mary is survived, and will be dearly missed, by her daughters, Lisa Morla of
Framingham, MA, and Jennifer Morla de Matran, of San Francisco, and son inlaws
Nilus de Matran and Phil McElwee. Mary was the loving grandmother of
two grandchildren, Petra Sophia and Zara Simone de Matran. Mary’s easy
smile, and wicked bridge game, will be missed by many.
A memorial in celebration of Mary’s life will be held at the Madison Winter
Club in the early spring. In lieu of flowers, please direct donations in her
memory to the Scranton Memorial Library.
