Peter was born on August 11, 1949, in Grange-over-Sands, England, to the late Mavis Salkeld and Cyril Staniforth. Originally from England, he spent many years living in Grange-over-Sands and Carlisle before coming to the United States in 1975 for his late wife, Gail. Together they raised their family in Killingworth beginning in 1979.
Peter earned an associate’s degree from Lancaster College (UK), then worked for decades as a highly skilled mechanical and electrical draft engineer, patenting several concepts. In his personal life, he put his skills to good use, amazing others with his ability to repair just about anything and designing and building his own house expansion. Throughout his career, he worked for Cooper Instruments, Corometrics, and Bigelow Boilers before retiring in 2017.
Peter had a deep appreciation for life and the outdoors. He was an avid pickleball player who spent countless days at local courts near Killingworth and nearby towns. He even informally taught many people how to play the sport. He also loved dancing, live music, nature, motorcycles, and traveling. Known by many as a walking tree encyclopedia, Peter had a lifelong passion for the natural world and more than 50 years of motorcycle riding experience. Above all, he cherished spending time with his girlfriend, Toni, as well as with his family and friends.
Peter is survived by his daughter, Sharon Staniforth of Killingworth, CT; his son, Kevin Staniforth, and daughter-in-law, Lavina Staniforth; and his three grandchildren, who reside in Albuquerque, NM. He is also survived by his brothers, Terry and David of the United Kingdom, and Ricky of Canada, along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Gail Staniforth, in 2010.
