Richard Jacob Apell MD

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul; and he leadeth me in the path of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death I will fear no evil; for thou art with me thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

I was very saddened to hear of the death of Richard. He was an inspiration to me as I was just starting my career in early childhood. I learned so much from him when we were at the Gesell Institute. I send my deepest sympathy to his family. Sincerely, Judy August

I was one of many optometrists that Dr Apell mentored, although he could not help my golf game! Developmental optometry benefited greatly from his life, thank you Dr Apell.

Please accept my deepest sympathies for the sad loss of Dr. Apell. His positive impact on my life is beyond description. Not only did I learn to read because of him, but he also taught me about the importance of compassion towards others and zealous advocacy for those in need of assistance. And I am just one of hundreds of children he helped over many decades of service.

Dick Apell was a giant and pioneer in our profession and will be missed by many. So many children and adults have a better quality of life as a result of Dick's important work. Wishing the family many happy memories in this time of sorrow.
