

He leaves behind a loving wife of 50 years, Alyce Akowchek Jones and four loving children and nine grandchildren: Alison Anderson, husband Chris and grandchildren Natalie and David all of Marietta GA, Robert A. Jones, wife Nancy and grandchildren Robert, Connor, Taylor, Alexander and predeceased Kyla all of Old Wethersfield CT, David Jones and wife Cindy and grandchildren Madelyne, Lily and Sawyer all of Loveland, Ohio and Douglas Jones and wife Fatima of Guilford CT. He was actively involved coaching his children in youth sports and carried this enthusiasm into his grandchildren’s’ lives as their biggest fan and life coach.
Mr. Jones graduated from Naugatuck High School in 1947 and Cheshire Academy in 1948 where he played football and basketball. He attended Colby College before entering the Navy where he served two years during the Korean Conflict aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Coral Sea. After his discharge he attended the University of New Haven and received a degree in Mechanical Engineering.
Mr. Jones was employed by Pratt and Whitney Aircraft in East Hartford as a Design Project Engineer for 37 years, working on engine design and aircraft integration, coordinating engine / aircraft installations. He also worked with NASA on advanced materials and engine concepts. He retired in 1991 and holds a patent on an aircraft engine thrust reverser. During his retirement years from Pratt and Whitney he worked for General Dynamics / Electric Boat on submarine design and then for Belcan Engineering doing engine design work for Pratt and Whitney. He retired from Belcan in 2007 as Integration and Installation Manager. He was a former deacon of the Madison Congregational Church. He loved golf, skiing and was an avid Red Sox fan. Most of all he loved spending time with his family.
Calling hours will be Sunday, August 15, 2010 from 4 to 8 pm at Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Road, Madison, Ct, 06443. Funeral Services will be Monday, August 16, 2010 at 2:00 pm at Swan Funeral Home with burial to follow in North Madison Cemetery on Race Hill Road.
