

William E. Mercer Jr., husband of Susan Mercer died peacefully at home with his loving wife by his side on May 25, 2013. Bill and Susan were married at St. Barts in NYC on December 18, 1982. They spent a loving life together. He was born June 8, 1934 in Toledo, Ohio. Bill graduated from Yale University class of 1956 where he was a member of Wolfshead and Captain of the Yale Rugby Team. Bill was a stockbroker for over 40 years in New York and in San Francisco. Much of his career was spent in senior management positions at prestigious firms, including Blythe, Eastman Dillion and at Hambrect & Quist. His career generated many new friendships and allowed him to be a mentor to several. Bill was the past President of the Sales Managers of Wall Street and was a Director of the California Marine Mammal Center. Bill leaves his children Margaret Mercer Abernethy and her husband David, Katherine Mercer and his granddaughter Marissa Mercer. He was pre-deceased by his son William Burton Mercer as well as his parents Ethel & William Earl Mercer. He also leaves his sister Clara Jean Shank and her husband Robert, his sister in laws Diane Phillips and Linda Crossen along with numerous nieces & nephews. He was also pre-deceased by his brother in law George Phillips. Bill was a kind, considerate and generous man, always a gentleman. He was happiest on or near the water, sailing was among one of his favorite sports. A memorial service will held on Sat. June 1st, 2013 at 12:00 PM at the Swan Funeral Home, 825 Boston Post Rd. Madison, CT. Should friends desire memorial donations in Bill's memory can be made to the Institute of Neurodegenerative Disorders, 60 Temple St. New Haven, CT or The Michael J Fox Foundation.
