Charlie, (Boo Boo) was born on March 20, 1922 to Joseph and Delicata (Scarioli) Martella in Koblenz, Germany. He married Irene Sczygiel and worked for 30 years for the Ogden and Moffett trucking company where he was a truck driver and Teamster. Charlie loved dogs and was a very caring “dad” to his two Chihuahuas, Becky and Bunny.
After retirement, Charlie was very active at the Madison Heights Active Adult Center where he played pool and bingo. He also raised money for the center by selling 50/50 raffle tickets and because of his jovial personality was always able to convince everyone to make a donation. Charlie was named Volunteer of the Year during his time at the center and was honored at a luncheon during an awards ceremony.
Upon hearing of Charlie’s passing, typical comments about him - made by those who knew him - included: “They broke the mold when they made Charlie – he was one of a kind.” “He was a good man with a kind soul.” “He leaves a legacy of love and laughter.” “A man full of love, kindness, forgiveness and acceptance.” “His jokes would always make everyone laugh, even in the toughest times.” “His spirit would light up a room.” “Charlie will be missed, and his spirit will live on in all of us.”
Charlie was preceded in death by his father Joseph, his mother Delicata, his wife Irene and his sister Helen. He is survived by his sister Maria and several nieces and nephews.
We can all hear Charlie telling us goodbye in his own inimitable way: “See ya’ later, alligator! After while, crocodile!” And hearing that makes us smile as we remember him.
