Elmer married the love of his life, Marian, on August 28, 1954. Faith, Family and love of his country were the most important things to him. He was the best husband, father, and grandfather. If there was a baby crying, just hand them to him. They instantly found comfort in his arms. Everyone who knew him was touched by his kindness, smiles, and warmth.
He served his country in the Air Force from 1949 to 1955, serving overseas during the Korean conflict. After returning home, he returned to college while supporting his growing family. Elmer graduated from Xavier University in Cincinnati and was very proud to pass the bar on his first try in 1963. His career spanned decades in transportation law. He was considered an expert witness for the Interstate Commerce Commission, testifying before them in Washington often. Upon retiring he worked for the Census Bureau during the 2000 and 2010 cycles. He was the man whom they sent anyone who was angry. Within minutes the problem was solved and everyone was smiling.
Elmer spent countless hours volunteering in his church and community. While his children were young, he was active in scouts including serving as Scout Master. Any time the school needed a volunteer, he was there. He never missed a school program or conference and attended all the extracurricular activities, competitions, parades (marching band and baton), and sports games for his children and grandchildren. His children’s friends knew they could go to him if they needed someone to lend a listening ear. The house was always filled with laughter, and it was not unusual for there to be more than a dozen people around the dinner table as all were welcome. Even as his children became adults and had families of their own, everyone would gather on Sunday to share a meal and spend time together.
As a devout Catholic, he volunteered for many activities and fund raisers, wherever it was needed. He hosted engaged couples, was a member of the church board, and assisted with the weekly collections. Elmer was an active member of the Knights of Columbus for 75 years. He contributed to many charities over the years.
Elmer was active in politics and was a member of the Macomb Republican Party, including serving as a precinct delegate. He worked at the polls for many years. For over 30 years Elmer served on several committees for the City of Sterling Heights, including the Brownfield Redevelopment Authority, the traffic/road committee and the Employee Compensation Committee.
He enjoyed bowling, golf, and playing cards. Nothing made him happier than spending time with friends and family.
He is survived by his children: Denis Maue (Paula), David Maue (Marlene), Kathy Williams (Steve), Daale Maue (Cathy), Duane Maue (Lori), Karla Brocker (Mike), and Deane Maue (Lora); grandchildren: Dan (Emily), Becky (Scott), Angela, William, Jonathan, Kelly (Paul), Matthew, Ashley (Justin), Alexandra, Ryneria, Kevin, Nicholas, Giancarlo, and Carlina; Bonus grandfather of the late Julie, Jennifer, Mike, and Scott Brocker; great-grandfather of: Creighton, Langdon, Ellyanna, Jeffrey, Violet, Paul (Larissa), Thomas (Kate), Zeb (Heather), Anthony (Jade), Alexander, Jesse (Makkenzey), Zoey, and Noel; great-great grandfather of: Xander (who loved visiting Old Papa), Grace, Olivia, Lelia; along with many bonus great and great- great grandchildren, and dozens of nieces and nephews.
