Gary is predeceased by his brothers: Richard (Maddie) and Gene (Grace); and daughters: Tammy and Karen Epperson.
Gary was a devoted family man. He and his wife, Kathryn, shared 65 years of marriage and built a strong, close-knit family. Gary and Kathryn were and are true soulmates. They were always up for an adventure, whether visiting Mackinac Island, crossing the Smoky Mountains, or going down to Panama City Beach. When they were together, there was always a good time to be had. He was proud to call Madison Heights his home, living in the same Park Ct. house his entire life. He grew up alongside his 3 loyal brothers and many lifelong neighborhood friends. In this home, he raised his family of five children and eventually spoiled his grandkids and great-grandchildren there.
Gary was an auto worker by trade. He was a strong member of the UAW, and he dedicated 37 years to working at General Motors. From working on the assembly line to running the robotics division, he worked his entire career at the GM Warren plant on Mound Rd. He was famous at work for being their “party planner”. He was known for selling football squares and planning their annual Thanksgiving dinners. He took great pride in his job, and his children have fond memories of visiting the plant.
Gary embraced life to the fullest. He was an avid outdoor enthusiast who enjoyed camping, hunting, snowmobiling, fishing, and gathering around bonfires with his family and friends. He loved to travel, spend time at the casino, and make homemade chocolates. Gary could often be found tinkering in the garage and restoring cars. His favorite being the 1956 Chevy. He also enjoyed relaxing with a cold beer in hand and playing his guitar, harmonica, and music with his loved ones around him. He loved NASCAR, and enjoyed camping on the infield watching the races at Michigan International Speedway.
Gary will be remembered for his sense of humor and captivating storytelling. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren will remember him as the “yes” grandpa. Whatever they asked for Papa gave them, but also for taking them to Rosie’s Park, ice cream trips, and vacations. As a husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle, and friend, Gary gave unconditional love and support to all. He had a deep love for his family and friends. His presence will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
Gary will be laid to rest at Roseland Park Cemetery in Berkley, Michigan. A private celebration of life will take place for family and friends. Please reach out to the family for details.
