

Born February 19, 1939, in Elon, he was a son of the late William Vaughn Davis and Myrtle Stinnette Davis. Al, enlisted in the US Army at 17, and was a patriotic veteran, who loved this country and its constitution. He retired from Winton Country Club after almost 25 years as a golf course superintendent grounds manager. He was a dedicated class A member of the golf course superintendent association of America. He later founded his business, Al's Total Lawn Care, from which he retired after 12 years. He was a member of the NRA for over 40 years.
Aside from his deep devotion to his family, he was an avid fisherman, of native trout and other fish, and loved deer hunting as evidenced by dozens of deer trophies. Also he was a dedicated gardener as evidenced by the massive supply of pesticide free veggies he supplied to his whole family and friends each year. He was an advocate of the return to earth movement in this country.
Alton was predeceased by his wife Barbara, on February 21, 2011. He lost the love of his life after almost 48 years of love, devotion, and dedication and never recovered from it. Alton, from a family of nine, was preceded in death by his siblings, Russell V. Davis, Doris Rodgers, James E. Davis, and Robert F. Davis, and infant.
Surviving siblings are Grace Watson of Forest, Jean Gilliam, of Forest, Bruce Davis of Radford, and Phillips Davis, of Madison Heights.
Alton is also survived by his children, who loved him deeply, Dr. Barry Burks and wife Kathy, of Greensboro, NC, and Josephine Berry and husband William, of Elon.
Alton is also blessed by five grandchildren, Michael Berry and wife Janet, of Elon, Jennifer Richardson and husband Curt, of Madison Heights, Matthew Burks, of Boulder, CO, David Burks, of Charlotte, NC, Rachael Wiley and husband Josh, of Knoxville, TN. Survivors also include four great-grandchildren, Amanda Berry, Cody Berry, Noah Wiley, and Heidi Wiley.

A special note of thanks and gratitude goes to Marvin and Betty Tomlin whose generosities and friendship has been a blessing over many years and their love, concerns, and caring was his inspiration until the end. The family will receive friends Sunday from 3-4:00 p.m. at Whitten Monelison Chapel.
A funeral service will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. following the service at the funeral home.
Interment will follow in the mausoleum at Briarwood Memorial Gardens next to his wife.
