Betty Moore Yarborough

Born on March 30, 1935, in Teachey, NC, she was a daughter of the late Aaron Moore and Nellie Louzinn Simmons Moore.

Betty worked for Amherst County Public Schools for many years as a school bus driver, while picking up shifts at Kroger in Madison Heights between picking up and dropping off students during the day. She was a longtime member of Monroe Church of God, where she gladly volunteered her time and worked alongside the other ladies of the church making Easter eggs and preparing for various events and holidays.

Betty enjoyed working puzzles, gardening, reading, and cooking. She especially loved taking road trips to visit her family. Most of all, Betty loved taking care of everyone and was happiest when she could do something for someone else. Betty was lovingly known by many as “Granny Birdie,” a sweet and sassy lady who never hesitated to speak her mind. She would do anything for anybody, but she was a strong woman that wasn’t going to take any flack from just anyone. Her sweet spirit, strong personality, and generous heart made her truly one of a kind.

In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Gordon Kenneth Yarborough; her son, Kenneth Yarborough; and four siblings, John Adrian “Pete” Moore (Mary), Lucille Bryant (Buddy), Carolyn Clark (Paul), and Nellie Spearman (James).

She leaves behind a loving family to cherish her memory including her son, Gregory Yarborough (Robin); daughter-in-law, Kathy Yarborough; sister, Katherine Moore; brother, Sam Lanier; seven grandchildren, Jonathon Yarborough (April), Shannon Yarborough, Heather Rosser (Barry), Kristina Yarborough (Steven), Crystal Smith (Michael), Melissa Shore (Christopher Erick), and Michelle Avila; fourteen great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 24, 2026, at Whitten Monelison Chapel, with Pastor Dallas Jones officiating. Interment will follow the service at Briarwood Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the chapel.
