Born on May 5, 1917 in Madison Heights, he was the son of the late Richard Earl Proffitt and Phronia White Proffitt.
He was preceded in death by his wife of forty nine years, Lois Freeman Proffitt; a daughter
Penny Kay Proffitt; sister Audrey Wright; two brothers Earl and Manson (Big Red) Proffitt; three half sisters, Alice Proffitt, Inez Tyree and Helen Robbins; five half brothers, Richard, Howard, Tom, Clayton and Dewey Proffitt; and his stepmother Lillian Proffitt.
He is survived by three daughters, Nancy Stowe, Kathy Hall, and Karleen Eames (Mike); a son, Troy Proffitt (Shirley); five grandchildren, Jeremy Stowe, Jennifer Seay, Robert Argenbright, David Hall and Michael Eames; four great grandchildren, Carrington and Haylee Creamer, Wyatt and Griffin Seay; three step grandchildren, Richard, Danny, and Randy Robbins; six step great grandchildren; one step great-great grandchild; a half-sister Evelyn Fitzgerald; a sister in law Rachel Proffitt, as well as numerous nieces and nephews and his cat, Kitty Tom.
He was a World War II veteran having served in the Army Air Corp and was a founding member of Eternal Baptist Church located in Madison Heights. He ran the Thomas Road Shooting Match for more than sixty years. He owned and operated Staunton River Sand Company which during its operation supplied all of the sand for Finley Corporation, Lawhorne Bros., and Marvin Templeton which was used in the asphalt to pave roads as well as for the construction of the River Ridge Mall. He loved fishing, growing tomatoes, birds, animals and racing as long as Jimmy Johnson was the winner. Most of all he loved his family. The Lord truly blessed all who knew him as a husband, father, mentor and friend. The family would like to offer their sincere appreciation to his two Hospice Angels Carla and Tammy.
A funeral service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Celebrant Polly Starnes officiating. Entombment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park with military honors being rendered by Lynchburg American Legion Post 16.
The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 pm on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at the funeral home.
