Born May 29, 1945 Clay was a uniquely caring individual, devoting his life to selfless service. Always willing to give the shirt off his back without expecting anything in return, Clay exemplified profound generosity. With over 40 years at BWXT as a dedicated machinist and nuclear technician, he showcased unwavering commitment. In the years following his dedicated service at BWXT, Clay embraced a new chapter in his life with equal passion and commitment. Retirement did not slow him down; instead, he dedicated an additional 17 years of his life to The Summit. With the same unwavering work ethic and genuine care for others, Clay continued to make a positive impact on the community he held dear. His service extended beyond the workplace, encompassing a decade in the National Guard and over ten years volunteering for the Monelison Rescue Squad.
Punctuality was a virtue for Clay, who believed that being on time meant being late. His humility shone through as he avoided praise and promotion, focusing solely on helping those around him without drawing attention on himself. In 1961, Clay played on the Madison Heights High School baseball team where they reigned undefeated and became league champions, then in 2016, his baseball team was inducted into the Amherst County Hall of Fame which brought him lasting pride. Clay's commitment to the game continued through coaching Madison Heights Dixie Youth baseball teams and enjoying slow-pitch softball.
Beyond his dedication to service, Clay found joy in golfing and beach trips. Yet, his deepest happiness came from being a devoted family man. His children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren held a special place in his heart, and they, in turn, held him dear, affectionately calling him "Papa Wood". Clay's memory lives on as an extraordinary man who left an undeniable mark on those fortunate enough to be touched by his boundless love and integrity.
In addition to his parents Clay was preceded in death by two brothers, Maynard Wood and Preston Wood.
Those left to cherish Clay’s memory include his loving wife Penny Wood; his children Sherry Wood Brown, Chris Wood and his wife Gail, David Wood and his wife Marsha, Ann Whitney Rose and her husband Lonnie; his sister Marie Fisher; his grandchildren Alison Wood, Katy Butt and her Husband Zach, Hannah Mays, Mary Thompson, Amber Wood, David Wood Jr., Matthew Brown; and 11 great-grandchildren, with one more on the way.
