Gay Lafern Mayberry

Born in Lynchburg on May 20, 1942, she was the daughter of the late George W. Vest and Bessie Raikes Vest. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Jewell V. Yeatts.

Gay was a talented and creative woman who owned and operated Gay’s Florist in Madison Heights for more than 30 years. Her creativity extended well beyond her work as a florist. She enjoyed making jewelry for her friends and was an excellent cook who found great joy in preparing meals and bringing her family together around the table.

Above all, Gay treasured her family. She was a devoted wife and mother, but being a grandmother held a particularly special place in her heart. She adored her grandchildren and cherished the time she spent with them, taking great pride in their lives and accomplishments. Some of her greatest joy came from sharing with them the things she loved most, especially cooking and creating. The traditions, talents and memories she passed along to her grandchildren will remain a lasting part of her legacy.

Gay was a devoted member of Union Christian Church, where she looked forward to attending services and sharing in the fellowship of the congregation. Her church was an important part of her life, and the friendships she formed there were very special to her. She considered the members of Union Christian Church an extension of her family and treasured the love, friendship and fellowship they shared.

She is survived by her husband, Paul Mayberry; her daughter, Michelle Vest and her husband, Calvin, and their children, Brittany Buckner and her husband, Nolan, Ashley Massie and her husband, Phillip, Heather Kiser, Hunter Vest and Forrest Vest and their families; her son, David Mayberry and his children, Yvonne and Adam; a very special niece, Joni Coleman; a special cousin, Richard Williams; and special friends, Becki and Don.

A service celebrating Gay’s life will be conducted at 6:30 pm Tuesday, September 1, 2026, at Union Christian Church with Pastor Jim Freeman and Tommy Singleton officiating.

The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 6:00 until service time.

The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Fairmont Crossing for the wonderful care, kindness and compassion they provided to Gay during her time there.
