Born in Amherst County on August 14, 1934, he was the son of the late Volney Howard Carson and Beatrice Hunter Carson.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army and later retired from the Lynchburg Foundry after many years of dedicated service. In retirement, he found great joy in raising honeybees, tending to his hives with care and sharing the sweetness of his harvest with family and friends. He was also a lifelong baseball enthusiast. From his days playing the game in school to cheering faithfully from the stands and in front of the television, baseball remained one of his greatest passions throughout his life.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 68 years, Rachel Beard Carson; four children, Roger Carson (Janet), Lorrie Johnson (Andy), Dianne Ford (Paul), and Mike Carson; four brothers, Morris Emmett Carson, Howard Carson, Herman Carson, and James Carson, Sr.; one sister, Virginia Harvey; three grandchildren, Matthew Johnson (Mary Hannah), Jeff Johnson (Ashley), and Samuel Ford; and five great-grandchildren, Elijah, Gideon, Susannah, Carson, and Eleanor.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at Whitten Monelison Chapel, conducted by his grandson, Matthew Johnson. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service.
