Born on February 4, 1937, in Ithaca, NY, Holcomb was the son of the late Maurice W. Nixon and Amy Rodgers Nixon. He enjoyed a fulfilling 44-year career as a road designer with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) before retiring. Holcomb was a longtime member of Elon Baptist Church, where he was deeply involved as a Deacon, Trustee, and Sunday School teacher. His faith and service to the church were foundational in his life.
Holcomb's passions extended beyond his career and faith. A devoted train enthusiast, he was often seen near train tracks, eagerly observing the passage of trains. He enjoyed model trains, and every year he took great joy in setting up his 85-year-old American Flyer standard gauge train track after Christmas, keeping it up throughout January. His mechanical skills were legendary, as he could repair cars and refurbish model trains with ease, often assisting friends with their own collections.
Known for his gift of storytelling, Holcomb was a dedicated family man who always put his loved ones first. He was a constant supporter of his wife, Florence, in her community endeavors, especially her work with history and genealogy. He was her steadfast companion, driving her to events and capturing moments with his camera. Florence’s contributions to local history, including her three books on Amherst County heritage, were made possible by his unwavering support. Holcomb was also a member of the Sons of the American Revolution.
Holcomb is survived by two sons, Alan Nixon and his wife Glenda, and Scott Nixon and his wife Jacqueline; five grandchildren, Kelly Wall and her husband David, Jennifer Woodard and her husband Mark, Dylan Nixon and his wife Sandra, Dakota Nixon and his wife Carly, and Drake Nixon and his wife Brynli; as well as step-grandchildren, Nicholas Gowen, Justin Gowen, and Olivia Wilkins and her husband Connor. He also leaves behind 12 cherished great-grandchildren.
A service celebrating Holcomb's life and faith will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Elon Baptist Church with Pastor Cody Bingham and Pastor Steve Tyree officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Elon Baptist Church, 145 Younger Drive, Madison Heights, VA 24572.
Holcomb's memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
