James "Big Jim" Stanford Harris Sr.

James “Big Jim” Stanford Harris, Sr., age 85 of Madison Heights, husband of Marie G. Harris, passed away on Friday, April 12, 2019. Born in Roanoke on October 5, 1933, he was the son of the late Robert E. Harris and the late Oorie E. Harris. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Robert Earl Harris, Jr. and a step grandson, Kenneth Almond. He was retired Foreman of the Electrical Department for Griffin Pipe and a member of Union Christian Church. Big Jim was a true outdoorsman who enjoyed all outdoor sports but he especially loved playing golf. In addition to his wife Marie, to whom he had been married for 64 years, he is survived by a son, James S. Harris, Jr. and wife Connie and a daughter, Teresa H. Stinnett and husband Tony; 1 sister, Joann Shorter and husband Ned; 1 granddaughter, Ashleigh Schrader and husband Stephen; 1 step grandson, Matthew Almond as well as 2 great grandchildren, Adelyn and Amelia. A celebration of life will be held at 2:30 pm on Tuesday, April 16, 2019 at Union Christian Church with Rev. James W. Freeman officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1 – 2 at the church prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Union Christian Church or a charity of one’s choice.
