James Foster “Jimmie” Sanders, 88, of Monroe, VA, peacefully passed away surrounded by his loving family on Saturday, August 8, 2026. Born on January 24, 1938, he was a son of the late Christopher Columbus Sanders and Vadnie Mullins Sanders.
Jimmie was a retired carpenter and attended Haymond Pentecostal Church. His faith and love for the Lord were an important part of his life, as was his love for his Bible, his children, his grandchildren and his beloved wife of 56 years, Peggy Sue Sanders.
A skilled carpenter by trade and by passion, Jimmie could build just about anything he put his mind to. Jimmie was a very talented banjo player and was always picking a tune. In his spare time, he enjoyed making birdhouses and “Canjos,” which are banjos crafted from tin cans and wood. He also loved gardening and took great pride in tending to his garden, especially his tomatoes and cucumbers.
He is survived by his loving wife, Peggy Sue Sanders; five children, Mary Ann Sanders, James Brian Sanders (Carrie), Victoria Sanders, Charity Brown (Troy), and Joseph Bradley Sanders; two brothers, Robert Sanders and Larry Sanders; five grandchildren, James Mollet, Molly Harley, Drake Sanders, Hannah Wood, and Troy Lee Brown, Jr.; and three great-grandchildren, with another great-grandchild on the way who was already deeply loved and eagerly anticipated by Jimmie.
Jimmie was preceded in death by his grandson, John Mollet.
A graveside service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2026, at the Johnson Sanders Family Cemetery, 142 Improvement Hill, Jenkins, KY 41537, with Cody Ison officiating.
Though he will be deeply missed, Jimmie’s memory will live on through the family he loved so dearly, the things he built with his hands, the gardens he tended, the music he enjoyed, and the faith that guided his life. His family will forever remember the love, wisdom, and memories he gave them.
