Born September 23, 1932, he was the son of the late Joseph Hedges and Julia Solomon Hedges and was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Bethel Hedges; his daughter, Joni Hedges; and his sister, Nancy Hedges.
A proud Army veteran, Joseph spent his professional career as an engineer with GE. He was a devoted member of Madison Heights Christian Church, where he faithfully served as treasurer for many years. His commitment to his church reflected the dedication and dependability that he brought to so many areas of his life.
Joseph enjoyed traveling, especially visiting historic train sites. He also found enjoyment building LEGO sets, focusing on those with intricate architectural designs.
Perhaps his most cherished role was that of Poppa Joe. To his family, he was much more than the accomplishments and interests that filled his life. He was father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose presence will be deeply missed. The memories made with him, the stories and knowledge he shared, will remain treasured by his family for generations to come.
Though deeply missed, his family takes comfort in knowing he is now home with his Lord and reunited with those who went before him.
Those left to honor his memory include his children, Joseph D. Hedges, Jr. and his wife, Trish, Deborah J. Keenan and her husband, Tim; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Jonesboro Baptist Church Cemetery, 9215 Patrick Henry Hwy, Roseland VA, with Rev. George Harris officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Madison Heights Christian Church.
