Joyce Bryant Newcomb

Joyce Bryant Newcomb, of Madison Heights, passed away on Wednesday, May 1, 2019 at Heritage Green. In God’s perfect timing, she was given the greatest gift and called home on her 84th birthday. Joyce was the loving wife of the late Charles Jerry Newcomb for 56 ½ years.

Born on May 1, 1935 in Amherst County, she was the daughter of the late Frank Harvey Bryant and the late Thelma Wright Bryant. Joyce retired from Wiley and Wilson as an executive secretary after 44 years of service and was the former owner of Madison Square Market in Madison Heights. Joyce was an active member of Madison Heights Baptist Church and enjoyed many bus trips with a lively group of members known as the “Keenagers”. She greatly loved her Sunday school class and circle group. Joyce was also a former member of TOPS (Take off Pounds Sensibly) where she formed many long term friendships. Joyce loved her family, friends, and church. She maintained a close relationship with two special groups of friends, the “work girls” and the “school group”. Each group met for lunch multiple times per year to share life, laughter and support for one another. Joyce was the perfect friend, always putting others needs before her own. She was gentle, kind, caring, patient and had a servants heart. Joyce was a caregiver to multiple family members in declining health and yet never complained about her burden.

In addition to her parents and husband, Joyce is preceded in death by her brother, Hundley Bryant and her niece, Sylvia Bryant Bailey.

Joyce is survived by her daughter, Jerry Lynn Newcomb Martin and husband Steve; one grandson, Jared S. Martin; one niece, Martha Bryant; and her sister in law, Mary Ann Bryant.

A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, May 6, 2019 at Madison Heights Baptist Church, with Pastor Todd Blake officiating. Interment will follow at Fort Hill Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service starting at 10 am.
