The world got a little quieter on November 28, 2025, when Larry Eugene Irvine (“Jinx, Chub-o, Moon Pie, Diddy, Pop”), 77, of Madison Heights, VA, left this earth the same way he lived in it–surrounded in all the ways that matter by the people he loved and spent his whole life taking care of. He was born on March 31, 1948, in Clifton Forge, Virginia. He spent decades working at BWXT, but truly enjoyed his calling as the local “go-to” handyman.
Born into a large, boisterous family with eleven brothers and sisters, he learned the values that shaped his entire life: hard work and taking care of others. If someone needed help, he didn’t hesitate. He’d fix your sink, run you where you needed to go, build a bedroom, or give you the shirt off his back–often accepting nothing more than a coconut cake or hot meal as “payment.” He didn’t ask for much.
For 57 years, he and his wife, Sue, were a feisty pair–full of laughter, stubbornness, strength, and unwavering love. Shoulder to shoulder in every season, they modeled faith and generosity.
He was a proud father and grandfather, and nothing brought him more joy than his children and his grandchildren. Recently, he made a dream vacation come true–a Disney cruise with his kids and grandkids–and it was the happiest he’s been in a long time. He loved with a steady presence and kindness that made everyone around him feel safe and cared for. Anyone who knew him knew this too: he was a lifelong Pittsburgh Steelers fan, cheering them on with the same loyalty he gave to the people he loved.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lucian Calvin and Mary Alice Irvine; his son, Chris Irvine; ten siblings–Calvin Irvine, Pete Irvine, Betty Peery, Leroy Irvine, Donald Irvine, Shirley Selby, Nancy Glover, Tommy Irvine, Mary Helen White, and Ronnie Irvine–with whom he grew up close, working, playing, and doing life side by side.
Left to cherish his memory are his devoted wife, Sue; his daughters, Shannon Floyd (Michael) and Kenzie Roberge (Jason); his brother, Bobby Irvine (Debbie); his daughter-in-law, Carly; his precious grandchildren, Gabriel and Margaux; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends, who he loved like his own.
A service celebrating his life will be conducted at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, December 6, 2025 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Pastor Greg Tyree and Pastor David Garrison officiating. Interment will follow in Briarwood Memorial Gardens.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Friday, December 5, 2025 at the funeral home.
To honor his memory, the family encourages simple acts of service—helping someone, just as he always did.
