Margaret June Maddox Hicks

Margaret June Maddox Hicks, 87, of Gloucester, VA since October 2016 and formerly of Lynchburg passed away on October 19, 2018. She was married to the Robert Calvin Hicks, Sr. for 56 years until he passed in 2006. She was a daughter of the late Warren Lester Maddox and Virginia Moore Maddox. She was preceded in death by her sister and best friend, Carolyn (Cookie) Hicks in 2014 and infant sister who passed prior to Margaret’s birth, Lois Maddox. In addition, she was preceded in death by a very special son-in-law, William (Bill) Johnson. Margaret was a graduate of Brookville High School. She retired from J. C. Penneys. She was a member of Chestnut Hill United Methodist Church. Margaret was passionate about family and loved gatherings with family and friends, vegetable and flower gardening, cooking, crafting, traveling, and reading good books. She loved to review the best seller book lists in the newspaper and reserve her picks at the library. She also loved keeping in touch with friends and family by phone and social media. Margaret was always up for a new adventure and also loved traveling and trying new things. She quickly adapted to the move to Gloucester, to live with Wanda and Charlie and made many new friends, who included her in more fun gatherings. In recent years, she especially enjoyed laughter with her great grandchildren and giving them advice and teaching life lessons. She never met a stranger on her life’s journey. She leaves to cherish her memory her fur baby, Daphne; children, Margaret (Rick) Coffey, Wanda (Charlie) Smith, Mary Johnson (Steve Garner), and Robert Hicks, Jr.; grandchildren, Richie (Kara) Coffey, Virginia (Eric) Halterman, Margie (Justin) Cain, Joshua (Laura) Spradlin, Chris Johnson, Scott Johnson, William (Lindsey) Johnson, Margaret (DJ Read) Johnson, Robbie (Sarah) Hicks, Robert Allen Hicks, Zach Hicks, Danielle Savage and Brett Wright; 26 great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Martha Herndon; friends who became family, Dennis and Susie Wright; and devoted nieces, cousins,. Margaret and her family are thankful to Curtis and Marcie Wyche for their kindness and love. A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, October 23, 2018 at Whitten Monelison Chapel with Celebrant Polly Starnes officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service starting at 1 pm. Interment will follow at Hicks Family Cemetery in Monroe.
